2nd Trimester

Head Stand?!

Hi! We had our 21 week u/s yesterday and our baby was asleep on her head with her legs in the air. Her neck was curved from the way she was on her head. It looked very uncomfortable. I know in the 3rd trimester, babies are supposed to be head down, but does this sound okay and a safe position for her this early?

Re: Head Stand?!

  • don't worry too much. Mine was trying to do a back flip. They will probably do another ultrasound at 36+ to see position and give you options then in regards to birth (c-section or vaginal)

  • LMFAO!!!!! I'm sorry this made me laugh so hard. Baby is floating in fluid and very cushioned etc. At this stage they will flip and float and generally enjoy the whole 10,000 leagues under the sea thing until late third trimester. Really, you are worrying for nothing on this one.

This. And, read some more 3rd tri posts about women who would give anything to have LO head down.

  • This is a tough audience. I asked the Doctor but the U/S tech had only taken pictures of the zoomed in images, so the Dr didn't have the view we did. The spine looked very curved and un-natural. I promise if this had been your LO in this position, you would have had a concern also. Thanks for those that answered kindly!

Between baby's fluid environment, and the fact that baby's bones and ligaments are not NEARLY as well-formed and hardened as ours are, that makes baby extremely flexible (in ways we would find un-natural).  If your tech and dr were not worried, then there is no reason for you to be, seriously :).

Like other's said, there is generally no need to worry about baby's position until about 36 weeks.

  • Rbtrumpet: Thanks for explaining! This makes sense and takes away mynwonder!
  • I just look at it as much as he's moving around, I think he's comfortable and having fun.

Don't worry about it, she is fine.
