Baby Names

Ashley or Caitlin?

My DH and I really like both names.    Ashley is a name that I have loved for a long time, even before meeting him, and always imagined having a daughter with that name.      He suggested Caitlin which I might like a little better, but I know there are many spellings that could cause frustration for her and I am not too thrilled with the nicknames "Kate" or "Katie".     If people would actually call her Caitlin, I would probably slightly prefer it.   Then again I don't see any negatives for Ashley...   Would love to hear your thoughts.    Thank you!

Re: Ashley or Caitlin?

  • I love Caitlin spelled this way.

I have a friend named Ashley and she hates being called Ash.

  • I'm a Caitlin. Yes, the multiple spellings thing is annoying.

They both sound dated to me.

  • I view Caitlin as classic and Ashley as dated. Both are nice.

    Have you considered Ashlyn?

  • My name is Caitlin and I pretty much go by Caitlin.  The only exceptions are close family - parents/sister/husband somestimes call me Cait for short and my grandmothers call me Caity (not sure how to spell it!).   I actually hate Caity but they are my Grams, what am I going to do?  But friends, work, etc I go by Caitlin, it's never shortened.

Needless to say, I'm partial to Caitlin!  Great names!

  • I love Caitlin.  It was on my girl list.  Don't care much for Ashley, but I also love Ashlyn.

  • Love Caitlin. I don't think nicknames will be a problem, just correct people and say she goes by her full name.

My name is Ashlee, so I'm partial to it :). I've never minded being called Ash (see username) but not many people do. More in school, than now. My SIL and middle sister are the only ones who use Ash each and every time they see me. My parents do sometImes - or "Ashee" (my dad is the ONLY one who can get away with this - all others who try would be severely injured lol!). If this was in the middle of the "Ashley" boom (similar to the Sophia boom these days) I wouldn't recommend it, but I like my name, so it gets my vote :).

  • I am Kaitlin, and have never gone by anything but Kaitlin. Well, except random nicknames that have nothing to do with my name. I do have to correct spelling all the time, but its because people assume Caitlin. No big deal there if that's how you are going to spell it.

  • I am a teacher had quite a few Ashley's and Caitlyn's this year. What about Ashlynn? I have only met two.
  • I always liked the spelling Katelyn then it would make sense yo use Kate as a nn.

  • Thank you everyone for the feedback.     We have decided to go with Ashley.    We like the name better than Ashlyn and don't see the falling popularity as an issue.   At least it will be common enough that it is recognizable, but she probably won't have too many others in her classes once she gets to school.     Now on to middle names!
