Quick help! Job search and resume help needed

I'm having to search for a new job because our independent contractor work is starting to require travel and since H and I work for the same company we cannot both be gone so I'm looking to get back into my business field.  I found a great job posting for a local business and I want to apply but it wants Quickbooks experience.  I have not worked with Quickbooks - is it easy to learn?

I want to be honest with them so I won't lie but I have no doubt I can learn new programs very easy and it specifies Excel use as well and I use Excel on a daily basis.  I think I fit the other qualifications but I don't want to look like an idiot applying for something I don't have experience in - but I think that it would be silly to dismiss an applicant for not knowing a program that can likely be learned quickly.  I have a BBA and MBA so my qualifications are there for the other avenues.

  • I have no idea how easy/hard QuickBooks is to use/learn so I can't speak to that.

But I will say if you are qualified in every other area apply.  Make sure you do a cover letter though so you can explain why you are looking and how awesome you are at learning new programs!

MMB is a smart lady.  You should listen to her.

I often feel like job descriptions in ads are somewhat of a wish list.  Employers know they won't get someone meeting all the requirements, so I wouldn't let it deter you from applying, and I definitely wouldn't oversell your experience with QuickBooks, so you don't mislead them.

  • I applied and included that I did not have Quickbooks experience but that I hoped my other experience and education prove that I am a capable candidate and capable of learning new programs.  I have learned a new program or database for every single company I have worked for so my thought process is that if they want the perfect candidate that knows their program already they should hire internally.  If not they should be willing to train someone with the other qualifications.  You can't teach someone personality but you can teach computer programs.  That's my self motivation for the day haha.

I hope I get a call - the job is perfect - in my industry and I fit all other qualifications and even better it is 5 minutes from DS #1 school and ten minutes from DS #2 daycare.  Fingers crossed!!!

  • I would go online and see if you can find a Quickbooks test.  If you can pass that it'll show you are pretty intuitive and can figure things out.  Good luck!

Don't you just hate when you have every qualification but ONE THING??

  • I'm a little late to your post, but I've used Quickbooks. Self taught. It wasn't that difficult to learn. I did not use all aspects of it but it was not hard. I think you could pick up on it pretty quick!
