Toddler afraid at nite/waking up crying

What to do???  DS used to be such a good sleeper.  Recently (he's 2 1/4 now) he's been waking up screaming & crying to be picked up.  I can tell he's scared, it's not the crying he's done occasionally in the past for nighttime social reasons.  He's also recently become afraid of the dark.  Does anyone have any advice?  I'm losing sleep like crazy.  TIA

Maybe give him one of those Glow Seahorses. I think it's Fisher Price. He just has to press on the belly and it lights up (pretty bright!), and it plays quiet music... Good luck!

That's a good idea, tx.  Tho I did solve it in one night!!  I followed Jill Spivack's video (google it) she's the author of (which I promptly bought) The Sleepeasy Solution: The Exhausted Parent's Guide to Getting Your Child to Sleep from Birth to Age 5 .  Ha DH says to return the book b/c we got everything we needed from the free video, but i'm going to keep it for any future troubles since it goes up to 5 years & we have a newborn & all kids are different.  anyway i'm posting my response since i saw 98 people read my post -you all must need help too!
