Subchorionic hematoma

Hi! I recently found out that I am 9 weeks pregnant and have had two ultrasounds. I went in to the ER on Saturday due to brown discharge, everything was fine and my boyfriend and I even heard the heart beat. However, they did find a subchorionic hematoma measuring 2 cm in size. I've been freaking out a little ever since. Had my first prenatal appointment yesterday and everything was fine, but they also spotted some bleeding from the hematoma. Anyone else have this problem?

Re: Subchorionic hematoma

  • I had one with my last pregnancy... I bled and ended up going for another ultrasound. The bleeding stopped after 3 days and the sch resolved with no problems... The size of the hematoma dictates the risk to the baby i believe. Mine was 1.7cm... and i have a 18 month old little girl!!!

  • Lurking, but I had a rather large SCH with DS, and he is a very healthy, active 3 year old. Mine never went away, so it caused me to be monitored by U/S every 2 wks. When it came time for PP bleeding, I did bleed alot heavier, but my doc thinks it was because of the SCH. Just take it easy, do what the doc says, stay away from google, and rest as much as you can!

  • My OB didn't even tell me that I had one--I had to find out by reading my own record.  AND my appointment to discuss all of my lab results was cancelled so it's just a waiting game for me.  This is my first pregnancy but I've heard that SCH's do happen and the severity depends on the size and location.  They typically reabsorb if they're tiny and not in a bad spot.  Good luck to you!
  • Thank you so much! That is very reassuring to hear! Congratulations to you as well :
  • Thank you so much! Makes me feel a lot better!
  • Good luck! I know it's scary! As others have said they are common and usually don't cause harm to baby. A lot has to do with size and location.  Mine was discovered at 10.5 weeks after I had a gush of bleeding putting me in the ER. It was large- just over 7cm on the longest side but not touching the placenta. My doctor prescribed home bed rest for a few weeks and is rechecking today (U also had a scan about a week after the big bleed). My OB seems pretty confident that things will be okay and has been very reassuring... Since yours is much smaller I am hoping it resolves even quicker for you!! GL!
Tried for 2 years before diagnosed with DOR and low Progesterone. MC at 16 weeks in June 2010 (Told Placenta Previa contributed to the loss)
Mommy to one darling & amazing little girl :) Born September 9th 2011 (C-Section at 38 weeks for Placenta Previa)

Surprise!! EDD 12/13/13 (Hoping for a VBAC!) Off home bed rest  and now just monitoring a large SCH. Stable in size but not going away. SHRINK PLEASE!

  • I have the same diagnosis with the same 2cm in size. My Doc said that it is very small in size compared to others, which even if you search on here can be more like 7cm - 13cm. Being smaller means less worries! I was put on no lifting, no exercise, no sex until my next appointment (almost 4w) just to be safe. If you search on the message boards for SCH, you'll find a bunch of information that will put your mind at ease. When I searched google it made my fears worse because of all the terrible things I read, but so many women on these boards have it / have had it and have had perfectly healthy babies. Just take it easy and expect more spotting or for it to be reabsorbed.

  • I had brown spotting at 10 weeks and they found a hematoma. They never told me the size, but I know it's small. I was put on pelvic rest for a month(from when the bleeding stops) and that will be 4 weeks Thursday!

  • I had one found just over this last weekend as well.  I suddenly had a couple large "gushes" of blood Sat morning & then lingering bright red blood through the day. We went to ER & we saw baby heartbeat & moving around. I was freaking out though. My hemorrage apparently measured 9.3 cm in size & is located, luckily, on the opposite side from where the placenta is.

The bleeding should slow down, as it has for me. I'm down to just brown spotting now. Typial recommendation frm OBs is pelvic and/or bed rest, but I've only been advised pelvic rest & to just take it easy. Nothing too strenuous. The hematoma should heal. For me, she won't take me out of the woods til I've had 2 weeks with no spotting, but we currently have no reason to believe anything more will come of this.

I was just where you were only a couple days ago. Any bleedign is enough to freak anyone out during pregnancy.  Drink LOTS of water & get some rest!

  • Unfortunately with my last pregnancy I had one between my placenta and uterus that never reabsorbed which ended up causing a placental abruption and I lost my son. I began bleeding the day before I hit 12wks and it never stopped until the day I gave birth @ 21wks. My best advice would be to stay positive and follow all of your doctor's instructions. Everything will work out wonderful! GL
