Hi, I don't usually post on this board, but my name is Mae, and DH and I have a 6 month old boy named John Nolen. That is a family name, and we like it.
I was actually glad we had a boy for the very superficial reason that we couldn't agree on a girl's name. Of course we were just grateful for a happy and healthy baby, but seriously, we can't agree. If we ever have a girl, DH is fully committed to the name Abigail. Since we already have a John, isn't that kind of weird like John and Abigail Adams? I think it's a beautiful name, but it's also a little too popular. Maybe I'm a hypocrite since I already have a son named John, and that's not a super creative name. Also, our last name starts with B, and "Abby Bryxx" just sounds like a speech impediment. No offense to anyone who actually has a speech impediment. Also, as if I need another reason, but he wants the middle name to be Mae, and "Abby Mae" sounds way too country to me, plus I don't really feel the need to name a baby after me.
Well, what do you think about "Abigail," and any thoughts on how it goes with "John" and what middle name works best with it? We might never have a baby girl, but I just want to be prepared if we do!
Re: John and Abigail
I wouldn't even think of John and Abigail Adams, and I doubt many people would. I love the name Abigail.

So, for what it's worth, my H was sitting nearby and read the name of your post and immediately said "John and Abigail...Adams?"
If you're planning to call her Abby, I don't know that it would be as obvious, but you should probably come to terms with people making that association. I don't think it's horrible but I know a sibset named Romeo and Julianna and I think THAT is horrible.
As for middle names, I may not be of much help here. I don't know that people would necessarily pair the nickname Abby with the middle name. I don't think middle names are used too often except at graduations or something, in which case I would think they would say Abigail not Abby. My H says he would want a stronger, heavier name with Abigail which he thinks sounds "light". His suggestion was Victoria.
I think Abby and John are fine. I even think Abigail and John are ok. It seems like I only think Adams when I hear John and Abigail, in that order. So, just always say your daughter's name first. Just kidding.

I love the name Abigail and it pairs nicely with your son's name. I'd probably gravitate towards a family name for the MN (since your son's name is a family name). I think that Abigail Mae is just fine.
However, if you don't love the name... just scrap it and move on.

I really like it. I love Abigail and don't hear it often. I think you should keep it! With names that common, you are going to hear them a lot in historical references. I don't think that should deter you!
FWIW, I didn't think of Abigail and John Adams. I thought of the play the Crucible. Abigail is the name of a girl who has an affair with John. They are the two main characters. It is a popular play that is read in high schools.
