Tylenol for Teething

DD is teething and last night was awful.  I finally gave her tylenol at 3 AM after she had been up for a while. So she went back to sleep soon after.  I felt bad I didn't give it to her sooner to make her comfortable and get her (and me) some sleep.

Clearly I'm not against giving her Tylenol but I don't want to overdo it.  How many nights should I give her Tylenol before bed?? Or should I wait to see if she wakes in the middle of the night and give it to her then?

Anyone else's LO have awful congestion during teething? She is so stuffy and it seems worse now that she's teething! Not sure if coincidental or if teething is causing her congestion.

Re: Tylenol for Teething

  • DD is so stuffy right now too and she is teething like no other! I'm kind of in the same boat as you with the Tylenol though, but she is sleeping at night well, naps on the other hand is a different story! I only give her Tylenol when she is really bad, the other times I give her her teething rings and things for her to chew on and that typically works. GL hopefully it gets better for you soon!

  • Our LO is on a Tylenol regimen during his serious teething times and during growth spurts because he breaks into a mild fever during growth spurts.  Our pedi recommended giving him Tylenol roughly every 4-6 hours as needed.  It helps him a TON.  I can't say if it's right for you, but I can say it's been working well for us.  LO has two "full" teeth above the gums on the bottom and is working on a few more coming in right now.

  • We usually give him a half dose when it's really bad and it helps him SSTN.  His first few were awful but now they don't impact him so much and he hasn't needed it.

  • Cj is 7 months and just screamed for an hour straight. After trying everything else I decided it must be his teeth and gave home some Tylenol. 15 minutes later he is passes out! He is also stuffy and seems to be spitting up more frequently. The pedi said he had 4 teeth ready to come in so maybe we have just hit that point. I wouldn't give Tylenol unless he was uncomfortable, but that is just me.

  • Not sure if it's available in the US, but in Canada you can buy a naturopathic remedy for teething called Camillia.  I have not yet used it but have heard great things.  I have been using Coryzalia, made by the same company (boiron laboratories), for the cold he has right now and it seems to be helping.

  • When I knew C was teething, I have it every night just before her last bottle. Worked for her. Its easier to treat minor pain, then to wait till its worse. Hence why I give it before bed.

  • I give him Tylenol only when it's really bad, which is usually the day before the tooth cuts.  But if she's in pain, I say give it to her.  Just don't go above the limit of what you can give in one day, obviously.  But a few nights in a row won't hurt her.

For daytime teething try Sophie the Giraffe from Babies R Us.  She's expensive but worth it!!!!
