Argh.....frustrating!

So before I got pregnant I was running 5 miles a day, 5 days a week. Nothing crazy but I felt good, had been dropping weight and was excited to continue the regime through pregnancy to cut down on baby weight. Well, my first 5 weeks I barely had enough energy to dress myself let alone work out. Now when I can force myself to get to the gym I have zero stamina. Today I managed to run/walk 1 mile before downgrading myself to the eliptical. I made it 10 minutes on the eliptical before I felt like I was going to pass out and had to finish my workout on a sitting bike. I am SOOO frustrated and disappointed. I have always been active but now walking the dog feels like an iron man competition. Is this normal? Will I get some oomph back in the second trimester?

Re: Argh.....frustrating!

  • YES! I had very similar frustrations in my first trimester. I'm an early riser (4AM for daily workouts) and it went from a great way to start my day to extremely frustrating because I couldn't shake the zzz's and I couldn't perform for a "good" workout. My energy really rebounded in the second trimester which helped a lot. The tough part is that as your baby grows, the energy isn't the big zapper as much as the need to accommodate a growing belly during your workouts. You'll probably run fewer miles or maybe fewer days during the week to adjust for joint/muscle recovery and avoid overworking yourself, but you can always do different workouts and resistance train to balance out your cardio days. I'm into my third trimester and my energy is still really good but the growing bump has recently caused me to slow down a bit more. You'll get there. Push through the tough stuff and give yourself some time to relax when you need it. My OB mentioned that your body is really focused on making that placenta early on, and once that process is complete, your body tends to level out. You've got this! :-)

  • Dh knew I was pregnant before I even tested because he came home to find me napping a few times early on. By second trimester, my energy came back.

  • I hear ya. I was an avid runner like you. A marathoner, triathlete and tough mudder participant. Here's my take: it feels weird to run with any kind of belly. Flat belly, B boobs is what I'm used to. Inthe 2nd tri u start filling out and its just uncomfortable to me. So I spin 3x a week, swim 2x a week and lift light 2x a week. Im currently at 30 weeks and feel great and have gained 13lbs. Running while pregnant just wasn't for me. I like being fast on my feet and the body just doesn't allow the same energy and stamina when your pregnant. Try not to get frustrated but allow yourself to adjust and accept the new changes. Also try to exercise to the point where u feel good at the end. If u feel like ur going to pass out its just too much. U need to listen to ur body more now and be patient. Ull get ur energy in the 2nd tri too. I'm a trainer too. Hope my advice helps!!
