Sore bottom

LO is constipated.  I think part of the reason she doesn't want to poop is b/s her rectum hurts.  She doesn't have diaper rash but her rectum is red and tender, I think from being cleaned so often.  She won't stand for a wet diaper and is taking Lasix so she's peeing very often, hence lots of diaper changes and wiping her down.  Has anyone else dealt with something similar?  Suggestion? (My pedi is on vacation and it's not serious enough yet to hit a walk in clinic.)

Re: Sore bottom

  • Some wipes are just too harsh for an irritated bottom, especially with a lot of changes. If you're not opposed to extra laundry, use cloth wipes (or extra facecloths) with water and pat dry after before applying a barrier cream. An alternative is to rinse out the wipe before using it.

  • Yep. What she said.

Also, this sounds weird but when DS is constipated I swirl a q-tip with Vaseline in his bum and he poops within 20-30 minutes.

  • Try lanolin. It works for my DD. I second the PP about avoiding wipes with lots of chemicals.

When DS had horrible diaper rash as a newborn, I would just stick him under the sink, rise him off, use some Cetaphil and pat him dry. The wipes were just too irritating for his poor raw bottom.

For constipation, have you tried taking her temp rectally, a warm bath, bicycle pumping her legs? Not sure if you've started solids but the pedi OK'd 2 oz of water/prune juice combo. Also the prune purees work like a charm (almost too good at times!).
