I have had 3. The Diaper Genie, Diaper Champ, and now I have the Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail.
The Diaper Genie was the worst by far. It has a really crappy bag design and it does not contain the smell very well.
The Diaper Champ worked well for about a year but then it stopped containing the smell. The good thing about this that it doesn't require special bags. You can use regular trash bags.
The A & H is what I have now and it has been the best pail. I have had it for two years now and it still works great. It contains the smell well and it dispenses baking soda every time you use it. It does require special bags but I buy the big box of bags and it lasts for about 6 months so it's not a big deal.
I agree on the trashcan. I got the arm and hammer one because it was half off on sale. It isn't any better than the trash can I was formerly using and trash cans are a lot easier if it is a particularly gross diaper.
I have the Dekor Plus and love it. The inserts aren't to expensive and last a good amount of time. DS is in size 2 diapers and takes two weeks if not longer before I have to cut it and make a new bag. The insert is a long cylinder of plastic and you just tie off the bottom to create a new "bag". It contains the smell very well, and he has very stinky poo (he eats Alimentum). I would definitely recommend purchasing it. Also, once you're done with diapers you can use it as a traditional trashcan so you get years of use out of it.
I find using a regular garbage can works best. I got a diaper champ and I couldn't believe how tiny it is. I liked the unit and how it used regular trash bags but I had to empty it almost daily. I now use a regular garbage can and I put poopy diapers in a scented diaper bag before I throw it in the garbage can. I only have to empty LO's garbage can once a week and it doesn't smell.

Honestly now I know why ladies recommended skipping a so called official diaper pail and just went with a trash can. We got a diaper genie...it was super annoying. After two months we just went out and bought a small step lid trash can and we take diapers out to the garage every two or three days. It is way easier then a diaper genie and we just use plastic grocery sacks as the liners. WAY CHEAPER!

we've had the arm & hammer diaper pail for over 2 years now and it's fantastic. it does a great job containing the smell, so far it's safe from curious little toddler fingers, and it holds a lot. i do the same as PP, buy a big box when they're on sale and they last quite a while.

Ubbi! It's made of metal, so it won't absorb stink like plastic does. Plus, there are no special inserts to buy, jut regular kitchen bags. It was $80 at BBB and comes in cute colors.
Diaper Dekor Plus. Love it - we have been using for three years and it still doesn't stink. We started out with a Diaper Dekor Plus and a Diaper Genie (two floors of house) and we threw out the the Genie because it stunk and the diapers would get trapped in and open in the chute, smearing everywhere. We bought a second Diaper Dekor Plus instead.

I love ours. We've used the inserts and regular bags and both are great. I was skeptical at first, but I don't regret this purchase at all.
