Interview

So I was just offered an interview for a position closer to home and paying a bit better...the closer to home is really what makes it shine brihgt.

What would you say so that you could get time off for an interview? Clearly I can't say I need time for another job opportunity...but I really hate lying. WWYD? Thanks for your input!

Re: Interview

  • personally I'd say I have a dr appointment and take half day off if possible. If you really don't want to lie (hard to avoid sicne you can't exactly tell them whats going on) I'd ask for a day off.

I might just use the word "appointment," as that's not a lie. I've done that in the past. Otherwise I've said I had a dr. or dentist appointment if I felt it was too suspicious.

  • I have done this twice already this year. Both times I just asked for a day off, without giving the reason. It is hard in my office as we are a close group, and if someone is going on vacation or something, we always hear all about it. Both times I just stayed quiet and said I would be out, nothing more. When asked how my day off was, I just said it was fine and went on about my day. I was like you, I can't lie to save my life. If someone would have really pressed me for what I did that day, I have no idea what I would have said. Good luck!

This is what I have done, too.  If pressed by a nosy coworker I just say it's a personal appointment and leave it at that.

  • I am interviewing as well, I have taken a vacation day (if I had enough time) had a sick day, and also Dr. Appointment. Good luck

This. Or just ask for a half day or full day off depending on the timing of the interview.

Ditto appointment. I try to schedule interviews at lunch or close to end of day...easier to change into a suit too.

  • Thanks everyone! I wish I had a choice in times or that they would do a phone interview, but no luck, they're all mid morning times. I think I may take a personal day.
