tDAP Vaccine?

I'm 23 weeks, has anyone's OB suggested they get a tDAP Whopping Cough vaccine during pregnancy? I'm not overly green in that I believe it would cause developmental delays, I say to each their own, but I'm just curious how many OBs are suggesting pregnant women get the vaccination?

Re: tDAP Vaccine?

  • Last pregnancy I got one the day after my son was born. They never mentioned getting one during my pregnancy.

  • It has become fairly standard to give in the third trimester. Pertussis also known as whooping cough has been on the rise in recent years. Babies can become incredibly sick and sometimes die from Pertussis, and they cannot get the vaccine until 8 weeks I believe. Some studies have shown that moms can pass some antibodies on to their unborn child when they get the vaccine in the third trimester which can provide some protection to the newborn.

  • You should definitely get it. It passes a little immunity onto the baby, as the baby can't get the vaccine until 2 months. Whooping cough can kill your child and is highly contagious. I'm not sure why you wouldn't try to protect yourself and your child from it when it's one shot. A lot of women here have stories about babies they've known who have had it or who have died from it...it's not something to play down in my opinion.

Edit: looked up age at which babies can get dtap.

  • They all should. And as other PP's said it gives a little immunity to the baby. They get a Dtap starting at 2 months.

  • My OB recommends that I get it, along with my DH and anyone who will be in close contact with the baby (e.g. close family, daycare provider, etc.). I think that they recommend getting it while pregnant so that some of the antibodies are transferred to the baby. I am getting it at my 28 week appt.

  • babies get their *first* tdap shot at 8 weeks, but it takes up to 5 shots for full protection, which they won't get until they are about 5 years old. it's important to protect yourself to protect the babies around you.

When should my child get the DTaP vaccine?

Children should get five doses of the DTaP vaccine at the following ages for best protection:

    • One dose each at 2 months, 4 months, and 6 months;
    • A fourth dose at 15 through 18 months; and
    • A fifth dose at 4 through 6 years of age.

It is safe to get the DTaP vaccine at the same time as other vaccines, even for babies.

  • I got the vaccine at my last physical which was November. My husband got his at his last physical as well. I'm not sure if they will want me to get another one or not.

  • When I was pregnant in 2010-2011 they weren't giving it to pregnant woman at my hospital yet as it was just becoming more available. I got it a month after my son was born as did my husband, his sisters and both sets of grandparents. We had a local outbreak that was quite serious soon after his birth, but regardless of that we were told that pertussis is most commonly passed from family members to the newborn so it was important for our newborn's safety that all family members or friends who would be in close contact with our newborn get the shot.  Now we're all covered for baby #2....

  • Yes, we also talked about the flu shot since I'm due in the fall.  Going to ask about both at my appt on Friday.

  • When I did the hospital tour, they really stressed about you getting it and the family that will be around your baby also getting it. my BFF's sister's kid had the whooping cough when he was a baby and it was scary.

  • ALL OB's/care providers should be suggesting pregnant women get tdap (plus their SO's and any other close family members that will be around LO) per CDC guidelines:

Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Tdap); & Tetanus and Diphtheria (Td)
    • Health-care personnel should administer a dose of Tdap during each pregnancy irrespective of the patient?s prior history of receiving Tdap.  To maximize the maternal antibody response and passive antibody transfer to the infant, optimal timing for Tdap administration is between 27 and 36 weeks of gestation although Tdap may be given at any time during pregnancy. 12
    • For women not previously vaccinated with Tdap, if Tdap is not administered during pregnancy, Tdap should be administered immediately postpartum. 12
    • Available data from... studies do not suggest any elevated frequency or unusual patterns of adverse events in pregnant women who received Tdap and that the few serious adverse events reported were unlikely to have been caused by the vaccine. 13
    • Wound Management: If a Td booster is indicated for a pregnant woman, health-care providers should administer Tdap. 12
    • Unknown or Incomplete Tetanus Vaccination: To ensure protection against maternal and neonatal tetanus, pregnant women who never have been vaccinated against tetanus should receive three vaccinations containing tetanus and reduced diphtheria toxoids. The recommended schedule is 0, 4 weeks and 6 6 through 12 months. Tdap should replace 1 dose of Td, preferably between 27 and 36 weeks gestation . . . 12
    • Providers are encouraged to report administration of Tdap to a pregnant woman, regardless of trimester, to the appropriate manufacturer?s pregnancy registry: for Adacel? to sanofi pasteur, telephone  1-800-822-2463  and for Boostrix? to GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, telephone  1-888-825-5249 . 14

  • I think 99 percent of OB's are recommending it. It is an epidemic and vital to your babies health.

This exactly.  I became absolutely convinced to get it, and to make close family get it, after seeing a PSA done by a couple that I know that lost their baby girl to whooping cough.
