Baby Names

Family Boy Name!

During Father's Day dinner last night with my parents, we were going over baby names I liked and asked for more suggestions for family names from my parents.  My dad had an uncle named Madison Hatcher.  I FELL in LOVE with Hatcher for a boy.  My husband's FN would be the boy's FN but go by his MN (my husband is Joseph Austin and goes by Austin) I'm not crazy about doing it that way since I think it's confusing sometimes.  What do you all think about Hatcher?

We aren't going to find out what we're having until our LO gets here.

 Big sister's name is Gabby.

Re: Family Boy Name!

  • I actually really like Hatcher!

I do think using the MN as the FN think is totally confusing though, but I know in some parts of the country it is a pretty common thing.

So would the name be Joseph Hatcher or Austin Hatcher?

  • It would be Joseph Hatcher.

I'm not crazy about using Joseph or any of our names in the baby's name actually, just something my hubs is in to.

  • He just likes the namesake of it since he's Joseph, same with his Dad and Grandpa.  I'm not crazy about Joseph.

  • So TRUE!! We told my MIL we also liked the boy name Liam and she said, "EWWWW! That's disgusting!!!"

Geez!  I love that it's different and he would probably be the only Hatcher in the class.   =]

I like Callahan!  But its your baby, your decision!

  • I like Hatcher.
I think if the kid is named Joseph he will get called Joseph a lot. Why not do Hatcher Joseph?

  • I actually kinda like Hatcher. If it's that big of a tradition in your DH's family, I would continue it. My DH's family has a tradition of one child having an A name. At first I didn't want to do it, but after I realized how far back it goes and how much it meant to him, I agreed.

  • I'm impartial to it - I don't think Hatcher is horrible. My BIL goes by his middle name, which is a family. I always forget what his "real" first name is, so if you think of it that way and you are planning to call him by the middle name, then maybe naming him Joseph won't be so bad ;)

I don't hate it, but all I see at first glance is Hatchet. It doesn't feel first name ish to me.

Honestly I don't like it.  I just think, "Oh another surname being used." I appreciate it's a family name, however as it's not your maiden name or anything most people won't get that right away.  Also I think of chickens and eggs.

How about Thatcher as an alternative?
