Getting pregnant AFTER birth control

Hi Ladies,

I plan on finishing my final pack of birth control pills next week. I know each of us women and our bodies are different, so my question is; If you were on the pill, what was the length of time it took for you to get pregnant?

Ive been on the pill for 5 years, but i have a gut feeling that i will get pregnant right away because my periods were very normal before getting on the pill. And it's just a feeling I have. So im just curious what were your lengths of time to getting pregnant after getting off birth control. Is it possible to get pregnant as soon as a month or two AFTER getting off the pill? Thanks :D

    31 months

Your cycle being regular before/after BC has nothing to do with how long it may take to get pregnant.

And, uh, good luck with that "gut feeling."

  • I stopped taking the pill in July 2012 and started TTC in December 2012. I have not gotten pregnant.

My cycles are as normal as they get (27-29 days) and I ovulate on cycle day 13 or 14 (I use OPKs and temp to confirm ovulation).

Cycle length and ovulation day have no bearing on how many cycles it will take you to get KU, unless you have a medical condition that affects that as well as conceiving.....you have a 20% chance every cycle with well-timed sex.

good luck on your journey, if you stick around this board you will learn a lot.

ETA: haha! I thought I was on the TTGP board, but my advice is the same!

  • It took me 5 months off the pill to get pregnant with DD.  But having regular periods before the pill and a good feeling about getting pregnant have absolutely nothing to do with actually getting pregnant.

  • It took me one month, one try. We were shocked it happened so quickly. I'm now 18 weeks! It can happen very fast!

  • I didn't have money to fill my birth control one month and during that month I got pregnant by accident.  I was on the pill for 6 years.  Everyone's different though and I'm sure it's not that way for everyone but just be sure you're ready because it can happen sooner than you think.  Don't get me wrong, I love my daughter with all my heart but I wish I had my life in better order before getting pregnant (meaning finished school, was married, had a full-time job, money in savings, those sorts of things).
  • It took us three months.

I was on the Pill for 12 years.

I came off the Pill in August, tried without charting, then started charting in November and got pregnant with DD in June (I also got pregnant in May, but it was a CP).

And yes it is possible to get pregnant right away and it's good to be optimistic, but don't get too ahead of yourself just in case it doesn't work out instantly for you. You have about a 20% chance of conceiving each cycle (as long as you are ovulating).

I was in the pill for 5 years before having my son. We waited a month before trying and then it took 2 months. I'm also very regular (28 day cycle, ovulate on day 14). I do think that can make a difference, only because you have a very good idea of your most fertile days, but of course, having sex on the perfect day is still no guarantee that you'll get pregnant.

  • LMAO at your "gut feeling". GL with that.

I got KU the first time ~4 years off the pill (from an IUI) and miscarried, then a couple months later again (chemical pregnancy that time), and now at 5.5 years post-BCP after an IVF, I'm 20w pregnant.

Every single couple is completely different. It could take you a month, it could take you a year.

  • I've only been off the pill for 2 weeks after being on it for 8 years...so I'll let you know.

My sisters got pregnant fairly quickly after getting off BC, so we'll see if that holds true for me as well, but I'm not counting on it because I'm realistic and know that it's different for every pregnancy.

  • With DS2 I was off my BCP for 4 months before he was conceived. But I wasn't keeping track of my periods and ovulation and temping and all that. I'm on my 2nd cycle since coming off BCP now and we were TTA last month and decided to TTC this month and I've just had this gut feeling it's going to happen this month and TBH it scares the sh!t out of me. lol I don't know why I have this feeling that it would happen so soon (maybe bc I'm using opks, temping, and charting?) But it's making me such a nervous wreck that I almost don't wanna do it lol. I should be getting O soon and AF in about 2 weeks. So we'll see if my gut feeling was right or not. I'm definitely not getting my hopes up for it to happen the first cycle though, that's very rarely the case. It can take 6 months for your body to adjust. & it can take a year for a healthy couple to conceive.  But good luck to you! I hope your gut feeling is right.

  • I was on the pill for 8 years and have been TTC for 22 months and counting.  Like PPs have pointed out, the length of time on the pill has no correlation with how long it will take you to conceive.  My cycles were regular right away after stopping the pill.

    PAIF/SAIF Welcome!

  • I'm surprised at all the snark. Way to welcome her ladies. Before DH and I got married I was on the pill. After we got married I tracked cm, cervical mucas, and pulled and prayed for over two years. When we decided to have a baby it took one cycle.

Positivity does a lot for your mood, hormones and will make TTC more enjoyable. Instead of it being a task. Everyone is different but you know your body best. Good luck!
  • It took 3 months after being on BC for over ten years, however I never had a normal cycle before getting on (which is why I started it in the first place) and my cycle were not normal after the first month getting off. I was using ovulation sticks to help me.
  • Forgot to come back to the thread earlier.  The condom ripped and wasn't noticed until too late.  I should have thought of the morning after pill but was sure nothing would happen.  Idiot mistake but everything's working out very well for us, I'm now engaged and my DD is healthy.  Some days are a struggle but it's ended up alright.
