Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

fingernails

I have a 13th month old son and it is impossible to clip his fingernails. I use to do it when I would rock him to sleep, but now he just goes to bed. It is a fight every time I try to get the job done and most of the time I end up getting half the job done. Any suggestions.

Re: fingernails

  • Nope, same boat. My LO used to let me do her nails while she sat in the recliner and played with something she isn't usually allowed to have. Not anymore though.. now I darn near have to pin her down to get them trimmed. Or just do one at a time over the course of a week LOL.

  • Honestly, I bite DS's nails. It's so much easier than having him hold still for the clippers.

This.  I'm sure some people find it gross, but my son thinks it's hysterical and gives me each finger one at a time.

  • i usually sit him on the counter and let him play with a 'special toy' like a wooden spoon or empty milk jug to distract him while I clip. it gets me about 7 fingers in before he starts crying. I just have to fight thru the last 3.

  • I clipped them a couple of times when he was asleep in his car seat.

Other times, I had someone distract him.

At that age, I sometimes resorted to letting him watch TV while I did it. Then I started singing silly songs to him. Now I can usually get by with just singing silly songs and talking to him while I do it, like saying "Snip!" every time I cut.

Toes are a different story. It takes a couple of tries to get all of his toenails trimmed because he starts kicking me.

  • I have somewhat pefected the art of clipping DS's nails while he's holding his night time milk cup.

He'll hold the cup in one hand, while I clip the other. Then we switch. Sometimes I have to alternate nights to get them all clipped.

Toenails are actually easier for me, as I can do those on the changing table. Just give him a toy or book to keep him occupied then quickly clip.
