Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Meltdowns;(

Ok, forever and a day my son has woken up at 6am. He gets a cup of milk and Cheerios and then around 730 he eats breakfast. Well apparently that's not ok anymore be he will not let us change his diaper when he wakes up without a full on meltdown. I'm talking needs a scenery change to calm down. ;( this makes me so sad. He has never liked getting his diaper changed but now he is just inconsolable. He sleeps 12hours at night so he cannot wait longer, like after breakfast,to get a new diaper. I try handing him Cheerios as I do it or his sippy cup, but he just swats my hand away and tries to flip over..... Advice????

Re: Meltdowns;(

  • Whenever my girls don't want to have their diapers changed and start having a meltdown I try to make it a game.  I try tickling them.  If that doesn't work, then I ask them to point out body parts (eyes, nose, mouth, belly, etc.)  If all else fails they love playing the their hair brush so I will give them that.  Another good distraction for my girls is to play with a clean diaper.  Hope this helps.

  • He has always , always been the sweetest happiest baby. Never ever cries unless hungry or tired. Yes, I know ppl might say this, but it is the truth. The last few days he's been different. Testing me if I say not to throw something. He will swat at my face ans laugh. ;( not things I'm ready to deal with yet,but need advice on how to handle it the most positive way. I not for spanking or really time out,but I feel like he needs some type of consequence.  I do the toys away after he throws them, except balls, obviously. HELP!

  • i know it probably isn't the best thing to do, but i have been holding off on changing his morning diaper until he has been up for about thirty minutes. it is full, but i find he fights less when he has been out of the crib and playing a little bit. then i can use a toy he is playing with to distract as i change. i hated when our mornings started with a meltdown so i had to come up with a plan...and this seems to work great for us... for now... i'm sure i will need a new plan soon enough.   :)

  • Power through the diaper change. Sometimes I have to pin down DD when I change her. Seriously, about half the time she freaks out. I have learned to change her when she's standing up, so once in a while I do that. I also distract her with something she's not typically allowed to have- my watch, the remote, the phone, etc. I have gone a couple of hours after she's been awake to change her and it isn't the end of the world.
