Heart Murmur

So we finally got in for DS's 18 month checkup. To our surprise, the Pedi diagnosed him with a heart murmur. So we are scheduled for an echocardiogram on Tuesday morning at the hospital. I am so nervous, just hoping everything turns up normal.

I'm so sorry. I'll be praying for your LO! I'm sure everything will be just fine they are pretty common.

Aww, I know how scared you must be feeling right now. DS was diganosed with one at birth (and the pedi just HAD to tell me while DH had stepped out = me emotionally wrecked by the time he got back).

The proceedure is easy, just bring toys/bubbles to keep him occupied. My DS ended up being diagnosed with a "functional heart murmur". They said that over time he may grow out of it. GL next week; T&P to you. Keep us posted if you can.

Good luck to you, but hopefully it's just a normal one that will go away. I had one for most of my childhood and was pretty normal -- difficult with exercise for the kind I had (not sure if it was something else with the heart murmur too), but otherwise ok. So, I had to see a specialist during pregnancy and she was observed closely afterward with no issues until her 9 month appointment. We went to pedi cardiologist for echo/etc -- at that point she did fine for most of the appointment, but it took a while, so near the end she got fussy. I suggest taking some distractions too. She was diagnosed with an innocent murmur and the pedi didn't even hear it at her 18 month appt. We still have to go back to the cardiologist when she's 3 unless any problems before that (didn't think so, though). When I was younger, I think I had to go back every year or so; I still have some heart issues now that I'm not sure are connected that I have to see a cardiologist every year or two years, but nothing really that affects my everyday life. Remember though that they are very common and most don't cause any problems.
