1st Trimester

1st U/S - Subchorionic Hematoma - A little Scared!

Hello ladies! I had my first U/S today, because I have had a tiny tiny bit of spotting just this morning and my OB wanted to double check. The U/S was AMAZING! I am measuring at 8w4d, but according to my LMP I am 8w3d, so a day ahead of time :) And it looked like a little gummy bear! At the very last minute it totally waved one of it's little arms at us, even the u/s tech pointed it out - it was so cute! It's measuring at 2cm and had a heartbeat of 173, the OB and tech both said it looked great, which made me feel so wonderful!

They did find something and my OB took me back into her office and explained that my light bleeding is due to a Subchorionic Hematoma that is 2cm in size, which is basically a bruise (?) and it will hopefully work its way out eventually, so I will probably have a bit of actual bleeding going on in the next few days, but that it does mean that I have a higher possibility rate of miscarriage. She did say it is somewhat common, but I would love to hear from other ladies if you do have one or did have one and what your experience was?

I have been looking things up on Google, but they are all pretty fright-inducing and scary and are making me more panicked. I am just focusing on the fact that our baby is so cute and beautiful and has a healthy heartbeat.

TIA ladies!

Re: 1st U/S - Subchorionic Hematoma - A little Scared!

  • They're actually fairly common, and it's usually the size & location that is the most important from a pathology standpoint.  From what I understand SCHs can form at anytime, but many women get them from implantation when the fertilized egg comes in contact with the uterus.

I've had 4 so far this pregnancy.  They're more annoying than anything.  My first 2 didn't spot at all, but the 3rd one was near my cervix so it spotted for about two weeks, including a gush of very watery blood.  After that it transitioned to brown and I really only see if I'm vertical for long periods of time or after I use the bathroom because of pressure on the cervix.  Now I have one that's on the side of my uterus, and as my uterus grows, it spots!  It may also be reabsorbed, but right now I do see some brown liquid daily.  It's lovely.  My doctor isn't really concerned, but did test specific clotting factors and has referred me to a perinatologist since I've had multiple SCHs over a short amount of time.

ETA: also, some SCHs are reabsorbed and do not bleed... From what I understand having a SCH does not mean that you will definitely bleed; it depends on the location and migration.

  • I had an u/s due to light spotting at 6weeks 2 days and they found two SCH's one is 1.6cm and the other is 2cm. My Dr told me she sees this in half of her early u/s that she gets. Since the first time I had spotting I haven't had any since. My Dr did put me on "light rest" which is hard with a 3 y/o running around! She also scheduled me for a repeat u/s at 8 weeks 2 days and she is sending me to a Perinatologist for follow up of these bleeds and since I had a previous m/c in March! Hope this helps! I know it's hard but try not to read to much about them on the Internet it made it harder for me to relax!

Thank you! Yeah, I am thinking maybe because of its location, that's why she said I will probably have a fair amount of bleeding (her words). Thank you for your reassurance! She told me no heavy lifting, no exercising whatsoever and no sex - poor hubby!

Yeah I didn't want to go the Dr. Google route, but my parents were a little concerned and now it's gotten me freaked out! Thank you for telling me it's so common, my doctor didn't give me that kind of a ratio, she just said it isn't uncommon in pregnant women. She put me on a kind of glorified bed rest - no heavy lifting, no exercise whatsoever - including my walks, and no sex, for the next four weeks, so I'm trying to get into that mindset!

  • It is definitely scary but as others have said fairly common. In my case I had a heavy bleed 10 and a half weeks when they discovered mine which measured just over 7cm on the longest side. They told me it was considered large and to expect more bleeding or spotting. They also put me on home bed rest for 2 weeks. It is still there but appears to be healing. MyOB said that it shouldn't be an issue by about 20 weeks or so. He also told me that MOST of the time SCH resolve or don't cause further issues. A lot depends on location and size. So I would take it easy, follow doctor's orders and try to relax a little. Hang in there! You're in my prayers!

I also had one throughout my entire first tri. It's gone now and never affected the baby in the least. It's so strange how everything you read when you Google search for these little suckers is so scary, and yet I've heard from so few people that it really affected their pregnancy negatively. You'll see on this board that a ton of women have them and they're almost always harmless. Bleeding is obviously scary, but you should be ok!

  • I'm in the same boat as you. My SCH was found last week because of spotting and it measures 2cm by 4cm. So from the u/s they showed that it is bleeding so they hope that it shrinks soon. It is scary to see any kind of blood when you go to the bathroom while pregnant but my Ob said that as long as its not alot and/or accompanied by lots of pain then i should try to relax. Just take it easy. I also heard lots of water is good for it as well.

  • When I was 13 weeks pregnant I started gushing bright red blood..I went straight to the ER I was sure I was losing the baby. Turns out I had a 4 cm SCH. I continued to bleed up until about 17 weeks although not as heavy.
I am now 30 weeks and baby is very active and healthy! From everything I have read and heard they are more of a pain in the a and scare you to death but everything should be okay!
