DS' tongue is black.

WTF?

Lazy research convinced me I don't need to be all that worried.  A quick call to the pedi, maybe a small round of antibiotics.  But it's a little alarming to see.  Where white milk residue would normally be his tongue is straight black.

Has anyone else dealt with this before?

  • I don't know if he's ingested any Pepto Bismol but that can definitely turn your tongue black. Maybe a call to pedi?

No Pepto, but I've heard things about Gripe Water doing this, and he's had a fair number of doses of that.  I'm gonna give it a day or two since it's pretty much harmless, but if it persists I'll call the pedi.

  • Colic Calm *is* black, and always turns my son's tongue black after giving it to him. IDK about other gripe waters. Think that's what caused it?

  • I think someone on my BMB had something like this. I think they called it hairy tongue.

    I'm thinking probably.

  • My LO got this as a newborn. They called it black hairy tongue. It is from the taste buds growing and the tops not falling off like they were supposed to. Cleared up on its own.

ETA: I was told you can tell if it is a bacterial thing if it easily scrapes off.

  • Sounds like hairy tongue.  How old is your DS?  If he doesn't have any teeth yet, you will need to start wiping his tongue and gums with a washcloth.  If he does have teeth, a quick brush of the tongue twice a day will help.  A lot of times this is the result of chromogenic bacteria multiplying in the mouth undisturbed.
