3rd Trimester

skin tags vs. genital warts

Ever since my the beginning of my second trimester, I have been noticing a few small bumps growing "down there". Yesterday morning everything was fine. Then I started walking around a lot and one of the bigger ones is now a little bit painful.

I am obviously going to ask my OB at my next appointment...but I just wanted to know if anyone else has gotten a few skin tags during pregnancy in one area instead of just one or two. I'm worried that it is could be genital warts instead... (even though I'm almost positive I was tested for STD's right in the beginning of my pregnancy, I am wondering if they didn't test for warts)

Re: skin tags vs. genital warts

  • You could have HPV which can cause genital warts and I don't believe there is a way to test for this.  It's very common so don't freak yourself out.  Your doctor may want you to come in to look at them.

I have a skin tag down there right where my underwear have been rubbing when I walk. It was sore feeling this week too.
  • You can get skin tags down there. They can cut them off at delivery. If you think they could be a std you need to get checked though.
  • You sure it isn't just ingrown hair?

HPV should actually come up on a pap smear. Mine did years ago anyhow. I am not sure OP, although I am sure your doctor will be able to provide more information.

  • Regular pap tests should have been able to detect HPV which in turn may cause genital warts. However even if you have/had HPV, not all strands cause genital warts. It really wouldn't hurt for a doctor to have a peek at them at your next appointment.

PS on the off-chance that it is genital warts you'll need to be treated ASAP or have a CS to prevent it from spreading to your child.

"What are you having?" "Well the radiologist says its a healthy little human baby. I'm a little disappointed, because I really wanted a puppy." LOL
  • HPV only shows up on a PAP if it is on your cervix. If it is on your external genitalia only it would not show up on a PAP. Also, when you do a PAP they only screen for high risk HPV. The strains that cause genital warts are not the same as the high risk ones that cause cervival cancer.

  • Yes, skin tags are common in pregnancy.  I get them a lot around my boobs and this time around I have a few down there as well.  If they get rubbed a lot, they can be painful.  I would still check with your OB just in case.

  • Safe to say I have the same thing! I am clear of STD's, too. I noticed one at first, then throughout the next 2 weeks, I got about 6 more. Majority were on my pubic area and near my panty line on my legs. I was FREAKED out. I went to the doctor and she told me to just put neosporin on them, so I did that for a few days. Then I got one more so I went back. She removed them and sent one off for a biopsy. The removal was super painful, fyi. But, at the time she thought they were mollescum which is common in pregnancy. Since your immune system is basically doing everything for your body, things just get out of whack. In a couple days, the biopsy came back and showed it wasn't mollscum, it wasn't anything. They called it just an absess. Basically she explained it as with the increased bacteria/discharge going on "down there" that your body believes it needs to start fighting it off so it works double time and the bumps happen. Since I had them removed, I've only had one more come. Safe to say I freaked out over something that turned out to be nothing!!
