Managers/hr q for you

How to address or assess if you think a direct report is covering for another's lack of work or doing things less than adequately etc? Not actually doing the work for the person but knowing that they're not doing what they should be... I am not comfortable directly asking bc that seems like it could come back to get me but the person drops little hints here and there if something comes up that I am reviewing etc. I can tell said person does not want to "tell" on coworker but I suspect there is a lot more to know... Suggestions ?

Re: Managers/hr q for you

  • I'd come out and ask the person.

You will need to ask them directly. There is really no other way to know what is going on.

If they are dropping hints I think they want you to ask because they are not comfortable bringing it up.  I agree with pps that you have no option except to be very direct about it, and assure this person that you will not tell the other one that he/she is the source of the information.
