Parenting after a Loss

UPDATE: Constipation?

DD is seriously holding on to her poo. The pediatrician has me loading her up with pears and prunes, but she won't drink the juice, so I've been feeding them to her. I'm also giving her yogurt with probiotics. She eats at least one of these things, and sometimes all of them, every day, and still, she won't go. When she DOES, she strains and screams and there's A LOT. I'm at my wit's end. I tried to give her a pinch of a glycerin suppository tonight, but I'm sure I did it wrong. Help!

UPDATE: I can't even get Elinor to suck down apple juice, of all things. She also gave me a look like I was crazy when I mixed prune juice and BM and let it roll out of her mouth (she'll eat prunes). THIS CHILD. Could it be she doesn't like her sippy cup?

Am going to try fresh plums next.

Re: UPDATE: Constipation?

  • Constipation is awful! Would she take prune juice mixed with formula/BM? That's what helped us in the early days. We found that one to two ounces in a bottle every single day kept them regular. I hate the sugar in juice but it was waaaaaaay better than constipation. We also used suppositories if it got really bad. If they're the ones made for 2 and up we cut them in half and inserted them way higher than it feels like you should. Those usually got a good poo within 12h and we would double up on the prune juice. Now we feed lots of foods that start with p on a daily basis: prunes, pears, peas, etc. P's make you poop is apparently a saying. When things get bad we'll give them a couple Just Prunes by Plum pouches.

  • Thanks, ladies. I'm going to try prune juice mixed and apple juice (waaaay watered down) today. I just feel so hemmed in about foods right now, because she doesn't eat too, too much, and I'm always having to give her the same things because of her #2 issues! But she did go sometime in the night or this morning, which surprised me. Maybe the suppository wasn't a complete failure. I just don't want to have to resort to that a lot.

Apples can be binding and cause constipation. We never had luck with the juice but I know others have.

Ack, this is good to know! Perhaps it's Ps forever.

Have you tried some light tummy massage? Or doing bicycles with her legs. That always really worked for Harper.

I have. Thanks for suggesting it, though! She's such a wiggle worm she won't really lay still, and doesn't seem to like it much.

Peas and pears seem to work well for my LO. I actually make sure she gets pears every day.

I think your LO might have had a few painful poops that make her hold it in, and it might take a bit of time to get over a 'fear' of pooping... try to focus on non-constipating foods. Maybe avoid dairy for a while - you can give probiotic powder instead of yogurt - and yes, apples are constipating.

I suspect you're right about the fear. I feel like she doesn't get anything but poo-friendly foods, though, and she's also getting super into feeding herself versus being spoon fed. Did you give your little pears to feed herself? I tried peas tonight but she didn't like them, and we only have pureed pears right now.

  • DS has had this issue a lot... Probiotic yogurt helps, but he still has very hard constipated poops... Blueberries and strawberries cut up so he can feed himself have helped.. FWIW, prunes constipated him and gave him belly cramps.
