Cloth Diapering

Swim Diapers - Worth the Cost?

Hi Ladies,

We CD exclusively but will be going to the beach for a long weekend this summer.  I do not currently have cloth swim diapers but am looking at them now.  My question is - are they worth the cost or do some CDers use the disposable swim diapers for water time?  We are not members of a pool, but may go to a family pool some, but not a lot.  Otherwise, there may be another weekend or two at the beach.

If you do CD for swimming, are there and OS or ones that come in just 2 sizes (like Thirsties covers do) that you would recommend?  If I am going to buy them, I would like them to last to potty training.

Thanks!

We are so thankful that our second daughter, Lillian Elizabeth "Lily", was born healthy and happy on February 11, 2013.  We love her to pieces.

We lost our first daughter, Hannah Grace on May 4, 2011.  She was buried on May 14 during a beautiful service at my home church. We are grateful that if she could not be here with us, that she is healed and whole with the Lord. We look forward to the day when we will get to meet her. We love her so much.

  • I bought cloth swim diapers. I'm having 2 kids, they'll get used. You can just also use a pocket with no inserts (but use one you don't love, as the chlorine in a pool can do damage to the PUL).

iPlay are cheap and they work great.

This. I used my Bummis Super Whisper cover since it has a polyester like inside. It worked great!

  • I just use one of my Grovia shells that I bought used and leaks.  It works great for the pool and is super cute!

  • We just use a pocket that started delaminating anyway, without the insert.

  • I don't cd (yet), but we use swimmi by bummies, only used a couple times right now, but so far so good.  DS was barely 10lbs, so we liked that it fit  smaller than disposables.

  • Last year I bought disposable swim diapers, I went through two bags, I could of bought 2 or 3 swim diapers instead, so this year I bought an iplay swimsuit that came with a diaper, and my mom offered to make me some. I also noticed a few for cheap at my local consignment store.
  • Eh, may get flamed, but we just used disposable ones. DD is nearly fully potty trained now, and we still use them in a shared pool, but not if she's in her own pool or at the beach, creek, etc. We actually have several cloth ones, which we used a good bit at first. We switched to disposable when we really got into potty training because we weren't doing diaper wash enough to keep up with having clean swim diapers as often as we needed them. DD gets red from disposables, but I always figured she's wet either way with swim diapers, so that doesn't matter as much.

  • I just wash my swim diapers with regular stuff like towels and clothes so we always have what we need clean. They don't need the whole CD wash because they don't absorb just contain.

I only wash the swim diaper once a month or so, and we go to the pool every week. He never poops in the pool, and the thing spends the whole time underwater. It's not really any dirtier than his swim suit. And yes, I'd just throw it in the regular laundry if needed.

I just hang it on the line in the backyard with the other suits and the towels to give it a quick dry. I hardly ever wash swimsuits. The chlorinated pool is pretty much washing it, imo.

  • Disposable swim diapers are expensive! Definitely the cloth are worth it. I always toss them in with regular laundry. I have 3 of them, an Imse Vimse, an Applecheeks, and an iplay. He's still wearing the same ones I bought him last year.

  • There's really not much cost involved... We don't go to the pool all the time, maybe once a week, but one swim diaper is fine for us. The same one will at least last all summer. We have a Charlie Banana one that I think I got for about $10, and also my MIL got DD a nice bathing suit from One Step Ahead that has bottoms that are a swim diaper.

  • I bought a cloth diaper when DD2 started swimming lessons once a week. It was a $10 iplay diaper, so the cost was less than a lot of pocket diapers. I just washed it on the hand wash cycle with our swimming suits.
