Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Ready to sleep in crib?

My son will be 4 months on Tuesday. Is it too early for him to sleep in his own room in his crib?

My LO has been sleeping in his crib since 5 weeks old, a lot of babies sleep on day one.

  • My DD has been in her crib since we brought her home from the hospital. Make the transition when you feel comfortable.
  • I agree with PP's. They can be ready whenever, it's just yourself being prepared for it. DD1 wasn't in a crib until 8 months. DD2 was in her crib by 2 months.

  • We didn't have the space for DD to have her own room at 4 months old but I do think she was ready then. She started waking up every time we came into the room, she'll finally get her own room in 1.5 weeks.
  • My son will be 4 months on Tuesday and I've been thinking the same thing! He's almost outgrown his bassinet so I think I will just wait for that to happen first. Plus, I'm still getting up with him a few times a night so it's easier with him right next to me.
  • We transitioned at about 9 weeks because her wedge for reflux; they said it was safest to use in her crib. I thought I would hate having her in her own room, but turns out I love it!  She sleeps great and my husband and I have our space back. Win win here. Also, the transition was super easy, just transferred over the white noise, and she sleeps like a champ at almost 12 weeks.

  • It just depends, we tried to put DS in his crib at 3 months but he had really bad congestion at the time and his nose would get all stuffed up so after a night we went back to the RNP. Then at 4 months we tried again and after a long hellish weekend he now sleeps in his crib in his room from about 7pm to 6am. GL!

    Henry Cavill...You're welcome!

  • Do it when you feel comfortable.  I wasn't comfortable until my daughter stopped aspirating and was un-swaddled. So we were ready last week.

  • I can't my LO to sleep in his crib.  I've tried starting with naps, but that lasts about 30 minutes tops.  One day I tried to let him cry it out a little, before I went in to soothe him, and not even 5 minutes after I left I was hearing the blood curdling screams.  Any advice?  I've been ready for a long time!

I let mine play in the crib for a few weeks a few minutes at a time. I would wind up the mobile and take her out when she fussed. I did this with both kids and it seemed to help get them use to the crib.

  • DS has been in his crib since he was 2 months old. At that point, both DH and I were ready to have DS in his own room. We were all able to sleep better once he was in his crib.

That said, transition your LO when you are ready. I don't think there is a time limit for putting LO in the crib at night.

  • My daughter slept in her crib in her room from day one but she was always a good sleeper sleeping at least 4 hours at a time. I was always a firm believer in getting them to do what you want by doing it from the beginning. I would make the transition as soon as possible to avoid LO getting used to sleeping in your room. I also started my daughter crying it out at 2 weeks old and now at 4 months old starting at 2 months she doesn't even cry when she goes to bed. Just turns her head and closes her eyes.
