Baby Names

Need ideas!

DH are expecting baby#2 in January and if it's a girl we'd like to name her after his mom.  MIL's name is Bea (pronounced the dutch way B-ay-ah).  I don't want to use the name exactly since we didn't do it with DD1 either. The only 'similar' names I can come up with are Bernice which DH said absolutely not and Bertina which someone else in the family already used.  I know they wouldn't care if we used it, but I'm not a huge fan of it either.

Any ideas of something that sounds/looks similar enough to Bea that people will know it's after MIL?

I am sorry but I don't get the point of using a name that isn't the family members name. I could see using the same initials or using the Mother's name as a middle name but coming up with a different name that sounds like the family's members name is a huge story to explain each time you introduce your new little one. I would say use the same name or use it as a middle name

But if you feel like doing so.....

I disagree. I think it's fine to name a baby after a relative by using a similar name or variation of their name.  We did this and it's not a huge story to explain. I just say my mother's name is X, so we named her the variation Y. People always respond positively.

Same here. My DS6 is Lucas nn Luke, named for grandpa Luther nn Luke. DDs middle name is Lauryn, named for grandpa Larry. Never been a problem explaining it and people are always positive about it.

  • Thanks for all the ideas!  There's some great suggestions.  I'm sure DH and I can find something to agree on.  I forgot to put in my original post that we're using as a MN, not first name :) But there's some great first name ideas in there that we could use too.
