Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Any strategies to help with spitting up?

I realize spitting up is normal.  I accept that it's a laundry problem.  I've asked our pediatrician and she said the baby might have a little bit of "silent reflux" because she spits up so much yet is happy and content.

I breastfeed and I've tried feeding her for various lengths of time and in different positions.  I've tried keeping her upright for a half hour or longer after eating...

It doesn't matter if she ate 3 minutes ago or 3 hours ago... When I put her on her belly, she spits up - a lot.  She also spits up just sitting there.

Has anyone tried anything that helped?  She wants to be rolling around now that she's 5 months but I am constantly cleaning up the spit up and I literally can't keep up with the blankets I have to keep down in order to save our carpet!  We have hardwood downstairs but then I am worried about her rolling and wacking her head off the wood!

Any help or advice is much appreciated!  Thank you :)

I've started putting 1/4 of a teaspoon of rice cereal in DS's bottles and it's helped a ton! He still spits up but not nearly as much or often. I don't know if you've introduced a bottle or even want to, but this is the only thing I've found that's worked so far.

  • she should grow out of it very soon.  For now I'd keep her in bibs to try to catch it.

I wouldn't do cereal in the bottle.

Both my kids were huge spitters.  DS more so, one of the nurses in the hospital commented that she had never seen a baby spit up so much colostrum in her life, so from day one.   It's just now starting to get better.  Our pedi said as long as they are gaining and not in pain it's nothing to worry about.

  • our pediatrician gave our son Zantac. it seems to help :)

OP, this is a choking hazard so unless your pedi tells you to, please don't do this.

DS used to spit up exactly like you are describing and I hate to say it, but nothing helped...ever. He just had to outgrow it. At least be happy that your LO is not in pain :)

How is it a choking hazard when it's dissolved in 6 ounces of formula? He's two weeks away from being able to start solids anyway and a lot of pedis recommend rice cereal in bottles to help with reflux so why is this any different?

ETA: I did speak with my pedi about this. His bottle is no thicker than normal.

  • A friend of mine does the rice cereal in the bottle after the pediatrician recommended it - but her baby's reflux is much worse and was causing distress.  We are about 3 weeks away from solids so I was considering spoon feeding some oatmeal cereal mixed with breastmilk after each feeding to help keep it down.  Wondering if that might work.

I really think it could help, like I said its done wonders for us! You may run it by your pedi just to see what he/she thinks but in my opinion, you know your baby best. The pedi is there to guide you and give you good info but in the end it's your baby. I hope if you decide to try it, it works for y'all!

This. Also, I EBF but our ped mentioned that DS might just be overeating. He said that some babies just take in a little more than their stomachs can handle. I do notice that DS tends to spit up more when he nurses for a long time. I can tell when he's overfull because he makes these uncomfortable sounds right before spitting up. And like your LO, he will spit up no matter how long it's been since his last feeding, if he had taken in too much milk. Our ped recommended nursing more frequently for shorter periods of time, but also said it's just something he will outgrow. DS definitely seems to be outgrowing it and has been spitting up less frequently than before. Good luck! Btw, if it's silent reflux, you probably want to get medication since it can do longterm damage to your LO's esophagus.
  • I thought the same with mine until I realized she was just over eating . Doctor said to take her off when she seemed content, burp her, and if she us hungry soon after try some more and repeat.

I have done so, notices she only eats 10 minutes to fill up, and the spit up has stopped.

    Good luck
