  • I feel that the professional approach is to talk to your boss about this before you put in for the transfer.  If you want his/her support, involving them from the start is the better way to go about it.

  • I'm more than positive he/she will be notified as they will be losing a person in their department. I agree with PP with having a professional approach and talking to your boss about it. He/she may be able to put a good word in for you and you don't want to burn bridges. How is your current relationship with your boss? Are you pretty open with him/her?

  • I would definitely have a chat with your current boss. People talk even they aren't supposed to.

  • I work for a large corporation and it is in our policies to notify your current suprervisor if you are interested in a different position.  I think if would be best to let your current boss know before you do anything.

this and yes your boss will most likely find out.

  • I agree with all pp's. and honestly, I find your post very immature, professionally. Why would you get in trouble?? Also, your boss needs to know if you are leaving his dept so he can plan for a backfill. Good luck.

  • In our company, your current department has to release you so the general rule is to tell your boss(es), ask if they'll support it, if they say yes, then apply for the position.

I even heard that other companies in the same industry have an agreement that if you apply for a job with another one (even if they pursue you) then they tell your company. Gah! I'll be staying right where I am.
