Spelling your kid's name

Do people ask you how to spell your LO's name? Do they usually spell it wrong, if they don't ask first? Or do they give you the "WTAF IS THAT" look when you tell them what it is?

This annoys me to no end. I am pretty much constantly asked how to spell Sergio's name. It's not a magic trick...it's spelled exactly how it sounds. People are always like, "I'm sorry...what? S-i-r-g-o?" YES, SIR-GO is what I named my child. On the $$$.

ETA: They do this with his last name too, which is Botello. That's right, also exactly how it is spelled; Bo-tell-o. I get, "Bottle-o?" a lot.

  • People do not understand phonics.

The gal at the gym daycare spelled DD's name "Charolette" last week.  She looked at it and right away said, "That's not right!" and crumpled up the name tag.

Char-o-lette makes her sound like a mini Charo, crawling around with a set of baby castanets .

  • I've found it odd that people ask me how to spell Bella... um is there another way? I'm used to being asked to spell my name... actually not being asked just spelling it because people just assume there will be a whole hell of a lot of extra letters in there.. what really annoys me is when they don't listen and spell it wrong anyway! It's Janel... J-A-N-E-L. No extra letters. Oh and I LOVE when people ignore the L and just assume it is a typo. Like it was supposed to say Janet. WTF?!

  • All. The. Time. But I pretty much anticipated that so I can't complain. First, I have to say it at least three times for them to get it. Then that's usually followed up with "That's unique, how do you spell it?"

If we are at a doctors office or something they usually call for "Hug-it"... really??

  • Mine is constantly misspelled, thanks to Mom liking the meaning of Jaime better than Jamie (not that I disagree with her). No one has ever had to ask how to spell Elijah. That was the major benefit of that name. If 2.0 is girl, though, I'm sure we'll encounter spelling problems since 1) I'm naming her after my favorite relative and refuse to change the spelling and 2) Madeleine/Madeline has been horribly bastardized thanks to the -lynn trend.
  • People usually look at me like I have 3 heads when they have to spell Micah, I never thought it would be hard to spell and I've only seen it spelled one way.... My name's Brittany and there are 100000000 different ways to spell it so I'm used to always have to spell my name

  • Heinrich I can understand. If I hadnt came from Germany I wouldnt know how to spell it either.
Nefertiti.....Do you know how jacked ppl spell that?! Better yet my maiden and married name, Herron and Newson. Do you know how effed up I've seen Herron, Herun, Heron, Hurun, Hiren, Heiron, yes....screwed up.
Newson goes always to Newsom. I say New-son. Like we have have a new son. They still screw it up.
Ugh....TIFFANY. The fricking store. Thanks to my ppl. Tiffini, Tiphanea, Tiphane, Tifane, the list goes on and on, and on....
Amir...Umir, Omar<---this is a completely diferent name and pronunciation. Yet and still they screw it up.....
Lets not even talk about my hubs name. Khameel (which it's even differnt on his birth certificate, ugh dont get me started)...Khamel, Khamil, Kalil<--completely different name.
Yea, can you tell my frustrations.......

  • I get this all the time! All of DD's stuff was mislabeled at daycare. We had to ask them to change it. I also went off on a receptionist at my pediatricians office and had them write a phonetic spelling in her file because I was sick of them calling to confirm appointments for Elise or Eloise. Neither of which are her name.

  • I spell it, then say his name. I added an extra letter so I expect people to get confused.

People always ask why I don't go by my real name, Dimitra. Uh, because people can't even get my 4 letter nn right!!

Don't even get me started on my last name.

  • Chloe is a popular name. People still spell it wrong...

    Chloey
    Cloey
    Khloe
    Clohey

    It's sad.
  • Ppl always say Alivia. It drives me buys its Olivia. With an O
    lolololo
  • Rylan isn't that common of a name so I always spell it for people. What gets me is that even though I say "Rylan" people still say it with a "d" at the end, "Ryland."

Before I got married, people always fudged up the pronunciation and spelling of my maiden name. I don't blame them... Romanotto.
  • I know a Cloei. The mid-90s were an interesting baby-naming time.

    How do people not know how to spell Sergio?!?nbsp; nbsp;

    For real?!
My name is awful so I usually just spell it or give a completely different name.
DDs is Caitlin. Everyone assumes its with a K. Nope.
No one has messed up DSs name but I don't think we'll have an issue with it. There aren't too many ways to spell Oliver.

Well, tbh, Sergio is not a name I have seen or heard all that often. I might mispell it. I kind of think if you go with a slightly less common name, you just have to accept from the get go that people might be unfamiliar with spelling and pronunciation.

People generally spell my kid's names right, as they are fairly common names. They always assume DD is a boy, and that's fine. I gave her a more traditionally "boy" name, and I did so knowing I'd have to say "oh, she's a girl" nine times out of ten.

think it depends on where you live.  Sergio is common here in CA. Adelheid on the other hand... I more get asked how to pronounce it.  Addle (like addled brains) + hide. yay for foreign names.

  • We haven't had any issues, but I foresee it getting mixed up with Aubrey. That seems like a more popular name.

I'm dying over Hug it. At least it's cute!

And BBJ, I saw a House Hunters International with someone named Gio!
  • I always tell them his name and then start spelling it because they will always get it wrong. Then I have to spell it again lol!

With Everett its not so bad but they usually ask me to repeat it again.

Liliana is a pretty straight forward name.

I think some are compelled to ask because of the youneek spelling trend. Like Jewelyah, or Stacea and other suchshit. You can't just assume anymore, people! There are a lot of spayshul people out there defining their uniqueness in the spelling of their children's names.

    I love you.

  • I generally have to spell both my kids' names. They are spelled exactly like they sound, Caden and Lindley, but too many people would make up crazy unnecessary spellings. Whatevs, I spell my name for people too, and it's Kim! I love spelling.

  • We've been pretty lucky so far with Mina's name. But I have been asked to spell it a lot. It usually goes down like this:
"W-I-L, H-E-L, M-I-N-A, Wilhelmina....Yes, that is a lot of name for a baby. Well, we usually call her Mina for short...It's a family history name, it's Germanic."

Our last name is kind of funny because it is spelled just how it sounds. It's not rocket science!

Yes ... DD is named Noelle Skye.

I assumed some people would spell her first name wrong - Noel.  Although they have similar meanings, Noel isn't a name, its a Christmas word, whereas Noelle is a name.  I didn't think it was that confusing?  People make me feel like I just made up a name.  No, its not made up.  Its a real name.  It's French!

I can understand spelling Skye wrong as that isn't that common.   Named after the Isle of Skye off the west cost of Scotland.

My mom totally annoyed me after DD's birth.  She sent out an email to extended family in referance to how to spell and pronounce DD's name (my mom is kind od odd).  Here's an excerpt:

They have assured me that this is the correct spelling - but I'm going to double check with them tomorrow - - - - -

    Noelle Skye

Pronounced Noel as in the Christmas song "The First Noel" and Sky as in "The Sky is blue".

Just in case anyone needed help with that!
Seriously???  Thanks mom!  Way to make me feel like I'm spelling my child's name wrong.  I wanted to reply (but I didn't):
No mom.  It's Noelle, as in Noelle, as in the French name Noelle.  And Skye, as in the Isle (Island) of Skye off the west coast of Scotland.  You know that place DD and I went to and showed you all those pictures of?
People also call her by the wrong name completly!  Including my own mom and the preist who baptised her.  For the first several weeks my mom was calling her Nicole Star.  The preist called her Nicole once during the baptism service, but then corrected himself.  A few weeks ago I was getting my hair cut and the girl's name was Noelle.  She told me that she got called Nicole all the time growing up.  Great!  I was prepaired for people to spell it wrong, but not to call her Nicole?

My 6 yr old nephew calls her Noel-LE.  I'm assuming he overheard his parents discussing how I spelled her name and that it should be pronounced Noel-LE.  I mean, why else would he call her that?

    So annoying!
