Babies: 3 - 6 Months

XP: Swaddling, the crib and RNP- how to transition

XP from babies: 0-3 since you ladies might have more experience with this.

DS is 8 weeks and 2 days last night he was in his crib for the third time sleeping and he almost rolled himself over when swaddled and he had also almost wedged himself against the crib.

What do we do to transition him from the RNP to the crib when he likes being swaddled? Or how do we transition him from being swaddled in a RNP to unswaddled in a crib?

We will be going to daycare soon and he will be in a crib there.

Thanks!

Re: XP: Swaddling, the crib and RNP- how to transition

  • What we did with DS is unswaddle first and kept him in the rnp, so he was still "confined" so to say. Then slowly moved him to the crib by getting him to sleep in the rnp first then once he's dead asleep, quickly moving him to the crib and popping the paci in his mouth so he passes back out. In the past week we are just setting him down drowsy and he seems to be doing well. :) It was a long process, took around 4 week or so for us.

We did the ferber  method. Previously we would swaddle just his arms in the rock n play and rock him to sleep and put him down asleep. At 4 months we decided to rip the bandaid. We unswaddled, put him in the crib, and let him put himself to sleep. It was the best decision ever. He cried off and on for 20 minutes the first night and pretty much has been going right to sleep ever since. He loves the extra room and I watch him kick and move around in his sleep all night long. I think the minimum age for the ferber method is 3 months so I'm not sure how you would do it.
  • Were also just cribbing it when we do ferber next week. We ubswaddled in the RnP first, took about a week and we've tried the crib but no such luck, she wakes up immediately, so when we start ferber were just going to put her in the her crib

  • We still aren't to crib yet but we have transitioned from RNP swaddled to pack n play in our room unswaddled.  First we did the swaddle transition but that was easy because our LO was always trying to get his arms free, so we used a sleep sack swaddle with arms out first and then transitioned to just a sleep sack without a swaddle.  Like I said that was really no big deal for him.

As for the pack n play part, once we had the swaddle part done we just started laying him in his pack n play every night first.  It helped that it had a toy bar and we put a couple of his favorite toys on it for him to bat at (that was when we still had the bassinet part in it, now we don't because he outgrew that at 15 lbs).  Sometimes he would fall asleep in it and sometimes not- we just kept exposing him to it.  Most nights after his middle of the night feeding he wouldn't go back in it and we used to RNP then, but we kept trying every night and he now sleeps all night in it and also we can put him down awake in it and he will fall asleep within just a couple minutes- same thing after his middle of the night feeding.  So anyway it was really easy for us, but we were patient and just kept exposing him to it each night until eventually he was ready to sleep through the night in it.  We didn't make a big thing of it or use any particular method, but it worked!
