Rachael Ray magazine told me that tidbit. And the Oklahoma state veggie thing pp said. It said there was a vote? And it became veg 78 to 19. I had no idea these things were voted upon.
Biologically, they're all fruit. Any veggie with seeds on the inside is a fruit. The reason we distinguish them differently had to do with some old tax. Fruits are sweet and can be used in desserts, while vegetables are savory.
Like BrittanyCupcakes said, anything with seeds is a fruit so technically, a cucumber is a fruit! The only true vegetables are leafs, stalks, or roots.
However, commercially, we equate fruits with higher sugar content and veggies with more savory applications. It gets tricky when dealing with bitter fruits or sweet vegetables. Most sweet veggies are now being considered starches because of high carbs (corn, peas, etc).
Bascially, if you are "eating a rainbow" you are sure to get all the nutrients you need. And if you are craving whole foods that are natural, count it as a veggie or a fruit...I call it all a win versus packaged, processed "foods".

Mind blown.
Now I can just eat watermelon instead of green beans. Nice!
