I won't tell you that they are ok. I will tell you that I placed them in our crib about two weeks ago. DS has had excellent head control from the start so I am not concerned with suffocation. Like yours, DS was getting his foot or hand stuck between the slats. They have worked out great.
Make an educated decision for what works best for you.
If you are going to use a bumper, the breathable ones are the way to go. I can't remember when we put them in DS1's crib, but it was right after he got his leg stuck in between the slats. We'll do the same for DS2. I want to say it was around 6 months old, and the SIDS risk is less by then.
If you are worried about it, make sure there is a fan on in the room, which will help circulate the air.
I actually just ordered one on Amazon - LO is 5 months and always gets his legs stuck and screams or smacks his head on the side. I think he's at the point where he can move away from something that's blocking any airways.
We have them in DS's crib. I put it in there once he started moving around more. He came close to his leg getting stuck in a slat. So far we have not had any issues. Eventually we will remove them when I don't feel like he is likely to get himself stuck on the crib anymore.
we had one on our son's crib since day one, then once he could control his head and roll from back to belly we put the normal bumper back in. we haven't had any issues and he's almost 6 months.
The recommendation is no bumpers. Many places are banning the sale of crib bumpers, period. It's a sensitive subject for me. My cousin died at 4 months old due to suffocation in a crib bumper. In the 90's it was normal to have bumpers, blankets, ect in a crib and he died because he rolled into the bumper and got stuck. Do to this reason alone I have nothing in cribs except a fitted sheet. I'd rather limbs get stuck than my baby to die.
Have you looked at Wonder Bumpers? They are safe and wayyy cuter than the mesh ones. They are cover each crib slat vertically to provide padding, but there's no suffocation or entanglement risk. They are even exempt from the ban Maryland has on other crib bumpers. You can buy them online at Target and Baby's R Us, but also from the website www.gomamagodesigns.com.

Also have had them in since Day 1. No issues to report.
