I figure Grant is only awake typically for 6.5 hours a day if I let him. He goes to bed at around 7:40pm and will sleep in to 9:30 am if I let him. Then he takes a 3 hour nap from 12 to 3. Usually I have to wake him up from his nap too.
I don't know if he should be napping the same as other 16 month olds or if he should be sleeping like a 6 month old since that is where he is developmentally. I know that mitochondrial diseases affect energy and they suspect that might be a diagnosis, but after chatting with my friend, I'm afraid he isn't awake enough.
Re: How much awake time?
Hi there! I was just thinking about you and Grant yesterday and was hoping I didn't miss an update about how you are doing.
Mikey wakes up around 6:30 and he'll take a nap from around 12-3 too. Sometimes it's shorter0-- like he'll fall asleep around 12:30 or 1. He usually goes to bed around 7:30. I figure he's awake about 10 hours a day.
I wouldn't worry about what your friend says- she doesn't know you or Grant's situation. You know what Grant's condition is and all that he needs-- and you're doing everything right.
I have to do an update on my blog soon. It is on my to do list with a dozen other things... Though there isn't a ton to report, I have a few things to talk about that are more normal topics rather than medical updates.
DS sleeps from 7pm-7 or 8am. He naps from 12:30-4ish.
You know your son best though, and should talk to your doc if you have concerns. I would think his sleep patterns would be more on par with his developmental age, but I'm not an expert!
Weekends (because this is when DD gets to sleep without me dragging her out of bed at 5:30am):
Wakes at about 7am. Naps from about 12-2:30pm. Bed between 7:30-8:30pm.
I agree with the others who say that Grant most likely needs the sleep he's getting! If he's developmentally at the 6m mark, then it sounds to me like he's sleeping exactly how much he should be
