Relocating to Idaho!

Hopefully somebody sees this....

My husband and I are born and raised Californian. We want to move to Idaho in the next couple years but aren't sure where to look. What are some good family friendly cities? As far as a house we would want a newer home with a 3 car garage 3-4bed/3ba and a little land (we currently have a half acre) for around $300k. Is that even possible? I've been looking online around Star, ID and I'm not finding anything in our price range.

Any tips would be very helpful. Thank you!

  • Boise is great for families! And tons of houses way under your 300k budget.

  • Housing in Idaho is very reasonable.  There are many houses all over the state that fall within your guidelines and price range.  I've heard Idaho Falls is a lovely place to live as well as Boise.  We live about 45 minutes away from Idaho Falls and we love visiting.  My mother is from California and has lived here for over 8 years.  The weather might be rough getting used to, depending on where in California you lived.  If you worship sunshine like my mom, I recommend staying in the Boise area since it snows and is yucky weather almost 8 months of the year everywhere else!

    Yes

300K in Boise will get you a fancy house. Lol. I have seen typically 150-200k is the average. Boise/Meridian area is my favorite. We currently live in Meridian, across from Settler's park, and it's nice for my LO's to take walks to. There is also a lot of events going on all the time, we are pretty excited for the Balloon Festival again!

  • I just saw this post, I would check out the Rexburg area.  Very family oriented!!
  • Just saw this...the Boise area is a great place to look. Boise is a big enough city that there's a lot to do (including special events and festivals to enjoy), but it's definitely not huge. You can still get anywhere around town within 15ish minutes, and the place has a smaller town feel.

If you like to be "where the action is," you might look for a place in Boise. Otherwise, you can be nearby and get even more house for your money in the suburbs (Meridian, Nampa, etc.).

    Good luck!
  • Check out the twin falls area..I live about 40 minutes away in a small town but twin falls is still a farming community and acreage is easy to find:) I love northern Idaho alot also!!
  • I am from the Twin Falls area..and love it! It is close to Boise and isn't a small city, but isn't overwhelming and huge. Love it here.
  • I live in North Idaho. Post Falls/CDA area is so beautiful! The lake is amazing and it is a good size town.
  • I'm also from Twin falls, I may be moving to Idaho Falls soon, but twin is very lovely, there are plenty of houses for around that, DH and I looked at houses for awhile before we decided to maybe move and we found what we wanted for around 225000, I used to live in Utah, and when we looked there we could find nothing we wanted for even close to that! In twin you can even get a brand new nice house for 200000, which I was shocked by!
  • Coeur d'Alene, Post Falls, Hayden, Rathdrum, Sandpoint, St. Maries, etc. for that area.

Depends on the size of town you're looking for, they each have their own positives and negatives.
  • Are you Mormon? If not I would stay away from the smaller towns. I grew up in Idaho Falls which is not a super small town but there is discrimination if your not Mormon and I know many other areas that are the same way. I would try Boise, Eagle, Star area.
  • I moved to Boise from the south and I absolutely love it. It reminds me of a smaller, less crime and slightly less cooler version of Austin, Portland, Seattle. Less cool but you kind of like it a little more because of it. Housing is affordable and the surrounding towns give you options. Super family friendly.
