Scary incident

Yesterday we went to the water park. We typically stay in the little kid section where DS can walk in the water. It's a little higher than his midsection but not too much. He was a little bit ahead of me, tripped and went under. He came back up but went under again. He couldn't catch his feet to stand up and the look he gave me was terrifying. I ran over and picked him up but the look on his face might very well haunt me forever. I almost had a heart attack.

Poor guy poor mama! Is he in swimming lessons yet? While we didn't have a ton of success with group lessons actually teaching my son to swim, they did absolute wonders on his comfort in the water and boosting his ability to not freak out when his face got wet. Like, prelessons, a wave knocking him down would freak him out for the rest of the day postlessons, he'd come up giggling, get bopped by another wave and come up cracking up.

He's not in formal classes but we've been very aggressive teaching him ourselves. He's to the point where we can let go for a tiny bit. He's also aware and does well with holding his breath if he goes under.

  • The same thing happened to a little girl at the little water perk near my in laws house. She came down the slide into fairly shallow water and landed right next to me. She couldn't get her footing so I snatched her up. It was scary seeing how that could happen even in shallow water. I follow DS1 around like a stalker when we are in water.

  • I hate "the look". It haunts me too.

DS1 is in lessons and we swim at least twice a week and this still happens to him due to his wonky center of gravity. Good thing you were close by!

  • I know the look and it's scary! We were at the beach a few weeks ago, and a wave hit DD right in the face. I was right next to her but it happened so fast. She got pulled under. I screamed and grabbed her she was hysterical. Thankfully she was over it, my heart raced for like 3 hrs after that!
