Surgery while pregnant

Hi ladies. Wondering if any of you has ever undergone surgery while pregnant and if so what was your experience? I broke my first bone ever on Friday and the ER doctors seem to think I'm going to need plates and screws, so I'm freaking out right now. I'll be seeing the ortho surgeon on Monday or Tuesday to find out for sure, but in the mean time my anxiety is through the roof. To top everything off I'm still battling ms and in a ton of pain for which I can only take tylenol. Also they did 2 Xrays on my wrist and the doctor said it was perfectly safe but of course I'm nervous about the effects on my babies. Any personal experiences good or bad is appreciated.

  • I had surgery on my colon about a month ago. It wasn't the most ideal time to have surgery but I didn't have a choice. My doctors were very good about communicating with my OB to make sure their plan was pregnancy safe. I ended up not opting for anesthesia and just had a spinal so I was awake during the surgery but numb from my waist down. I'd talk to them about your options. I was actually surprised that the pain medication I was on was pregnancy safe.

Just be sure to ask a lot of questions and get all of your options. And be sure to stay in contact with your OB about the plan.

What pain meds were you on? The doctor gave my Tylenol with codine but I haven't taken it because its a class c pregnancy drug. Hopefully they can give me a spinal too.

PS glad to know surgery went well for you and that baby is ok.

  • I had a heterotopic pregnancy and found out around 6 weeks. I had to have emergency surgery to remove my right tube. They used anesthetic and gave me Percocet for pain pills after. I took the Percocet for 3 days and then switched to extra strength Tylenol. Everything is fine with my uterine baby and I am 10w5d today! I hope you don't need surgery but if you do, everything should be okay as long as they get in and out quickly. The anesthesiologist said the less time under anesthesia the better. They also didn't give me recovery drugs after the surgery so I woke up shivering, shaking, and teeth chattering. It is weird but not scary or anything.
  • I had my appendix out at 7 1/2 months. I was under anesthesia during the surgery and on strong pain meds for about 3 days after. It was scary but I had a healthy baby boy at 41 weeks. No complications with the baby whatsoever. I'm sorry you are going through this!
  • Hi! I am also facing surgery while pregnant. I have to have a breast lump removed and biopsied have done a ton of research. I am really freaked out but from everything I have learned I think the baby will be ok. I asked about Tylenol with Codeine and they said it would be perfectly safe in the short term, they just don't want the baby to get addicted. They assured me this would not happen in the recovery period.
Believe me I can relate to how scary/frustrating it is to find yourself in this position! I feel like I want to control every little thing to keep my baby healthy and this is one big thing that there is nothing I can do about! Good luck.

I was on oxycodone which I believe is a class B drug during pregnancy. It didn't really help all that much with the pain, but it gave me some relief. I was offered other pain meds including morphine which I declined. My OB had no problem with me taking the oxycodone for a few days. Honestly, I just dealt with a lot of pain because I didn't want to take a lot of pain meds. It sucked. I hope you are able to figure out a plan and avoid surgery.

  • I guess I would be most worried about xray while putting in plates and screws.
