Triathlon and pregnant?

I am signed up for a sprint triathlon for July 13th . It's half mile swim, 16 mile bike and 3.1 mile run. Do you think this would be ok to do at 6 weeks pregnant?

Re: Triathlon and pregnant?

  • Hi!  I found out I was almost 7 weeks pregnant the Tuesday after a 100 mile ride on a Saturday and a sprint tri (got 4th in AG) on Sunday!  I was a nervous wreck but now I'm 11w 2 days and going strong. I've definitely slowed down and don't plan on racing until after the baby is born but I think it's kinda cool that I raced while pregnant-even if I didn't know! ;) I'd ask you dr but wanted to share my story.

  • The stock answer is always ask your doctor.

However, most of them will say it's okay to do if you're already at that level of training, don't push things too hard, and don't overheat since heat can be bad for fetal development.

At 13 weeks I swam a 2.5 mile open ocean race and am glad I did.  I also am doing a 5k running race the week after next, at 24 weeks pregnant.
