Cloth Diapering

Slightly panicked: less than two months to go

Slightly panicked:

less than two months to go and I only have 12 one-sized Charlie Bananas because I can't decide what I want to try or where to find it. I'd like to spend less than $18 per diaper if possible. I am also trying to find cheap wet bags and pails. I don't think prefolds is in the cards due to dad-to-be''s resilience toward them. OH MAN!

Any advice for a new freaked out mom who desperately wants to cloth diaper? Any brand suggestions and where I can purchase them?

  • Prefolds are SO easy. My DH was CD resistant and he can still do those. You literally just fold it in thirds and put it in a cover.

My DH generally reaches for a Flip cover and insert. He's also happy with pocket diapers if I stuff them, but I'm not a fan of their longer drying time. Kawaiis work well and are a great price. The Imagine pockets are good too.

  • I love my Bum Genius 4.0's for all the time and Flips Stay Dry for going out.

  • Another vote for prefolds! My DH wasn't on board with them at all at first and now he loves them. Seriously, they're NBD whatsoever. They also make laundry way simpler.

Now that we are in OS we really like Flips, with the stay-dry insert or a trifolded prefold.

  • I doubt the Charlie Bananas will fit a newborn.

You can either use disposables until one size diapers fit giving you more time to fill out your stash or get a newborn stash.

  • Ooh I LOVE my wet bags and pail liners from alvababy!!! More than the bummis ones I have that were three times the price!!! I also like my bamboo inserts from them, but I'm not crazy about em like my wet bags.

ETA: the pail liners are called rubbish bags on their website. And the wet bags have two pockets for wet and dry separate. Also, shipping is free but it takes 2 to 3 weeks to arrive.

  • Www.greenmountaindiapers.com has newborn and infant sized workhorses, which are fitted diapers. If you don't want to do prefolds, these are so great for containing newborn poo explosions. Also, these will fit before your one size diapers will. I suggest getting 24 to 36 newborn GMD workhorses and 6 covers such as the bummis whisperer or thirsty duos size 1, which can also be purchased at GMD.

I love my alva diapers www.alvababy.com at 5 to 6 each they are a great buy! I also like their wet bags and pail liners. Plus they have free shipping and great customer service!

Edit: if you order 20 or more diapers you get free express shipping and it usually arrives in about 5 days. But I used their regular mail with free shipping and I've never waited longer than a week. I also suggest their 4 layer microfiber bamboo blend inserts instead of the microfiber inserts they come with.

If you can't get DH on board with prefolds, GMD Workhorse Fitteds are awesome! They're easy and hold in the mess. You'll need 4 to 6 NB covers like Bummis Super Brites or xs Thirsties. Just look for a cover with double leg gussets, so they don't leak. I like Blueberry Coveralls and Blueberry Minis are for newborns. You can buy them from Amazon.

You could do a trial. You keep what you like and send back what you don't. Do Charlie bananas fit nbs? And yeah, PFs sound scary until you see a fold. Then not so scary. DH figured them out on his own.

There was a local CD class we attended and he saw, but he's resistant because we'll be moving the first month she's here (ugh ugh ugh) and there will be a lot of family care help. He feels the prefolds will be too complicated for the relatives who will be babysitting, and I suppose I don't disagree.

I know they won't -- they obviously have NB sizes, but I need a stash and I didn't want to put all of my eggs in one basket.

This is good thinking. You can usually find Bumgenius newborn for relatively inexpensive. The absorbency doesn't last really long but they are super easy to use. My favorite nb diapers are swaddlebees but they are more pricey. Another option people seem to like are the Kawaii pure and naturals. I didn't try these but I have heard good things.

  • SweetBottoms has a newborn diaper trial with fitteds.  Then you'd only have to buy the covers and inserts.  Might help with money.  https://www.sweetbottomsbaby.com/newborn_diaper_rental.html
