I have been really into Magnolia lately. What do you think of the name? Also, how would you pronounce it? I have heard it pronounced "Mag-no-lee-uh" and "Mag-nol-yuh". I'm sure it's a regional thing, I'm just curious.
It has been asked a few times recently, and it seems that most either love it or hate it. Some said they think it sounds Southern and should "stay in the South," which I just think is a really odd statement. I don't think it sounds Southern at all.
I really like Magnolia. To me, it is kind of a spunky (yes still "old lady" which I like) alternative to Margaret.
Like with many names, I kind of go back and forth in terms of /lee-uh/ versus /yuh/. I guess I say both, but I think I tend towards /yuh/.

We are considering Carys Magnolia if this baby is a girl. I really like Magnolia. To me, it is kind of a spunky (yes still "old lady" which I like) alternative to Margaret.
Surpisingly, I have seen two bumpies with daughters named Magnolia recently (one newborn, one toddler). Bigs thumbs up from me!

MJ- I love Carys Magnolia!
Op- I really like Magnolia. I say mag-nol-ee-uh. Very pretty and lots of nickname potential.

Not my favorite of the flower names, but not terrible. I pronounce it Mag-nole-yuh and I live in the south. That's the only way I've ever heard it pronounced.

I love Magnolia! I'm from the south and tend to say the ending with leeyah.
I actually do think this name is very southern thinking of magnolia trees, but that's definitely not a bad thing :
I love Magnolia, DH vetoed it. I would pronounce it Mag-no-lee-uh, I am from the northeast. I've noticed on Hart of Dixie which takes place in the south it is pronounced Mag-nol-yuh (Magnolia is the younger sister of one of the main characters).
I like Magnolia also, but it isn't on my list because it is really girly and obviously flowery and I don't see it fitting on a little girl we have, but I love it on other little girls. I think I notice myself saying it closer to the Yuh pronunciation, but I think the way it's pronounced most of the time is likely to depend on where you live.
I think Magnolia is pretty, but I don't think I would use it. It's just NMS. I pronounce it Mag-no-lee-uh. And I agree, it's definitely a regional thing! I have a friend who just named her baby Magnolia, and they call her "Nola".

Thanks everyone! It's nice to see so many of you like Magnolia as well! I feel like I have gotten more negative feedback/comments with some family and friends.

Oh, I love it! I am not that fond of Maggie, so Nola is a great nn option. Thank you!
I LOVE the name. I had a childhood friend with this name (NN Maggie) and I always loved it. I think the way you pronounce it is just more of a regional dialect. I say Mag-no-lee-uh.

It's hard to avoid the Southern aspect because that is where magnolias typically grow. The magnolia is the state flower of Louisiana, I believe. If this name becomes popular, I think people will associate it less with the flower and just accept it as a name.
I like the name a lot, and would pronounce it Magnol-yuh.
We are planning on using it unless we change our minds. We have gotten a lot of hot and cold feedback on it, but everyone agrees its very unusual and they haven't heard it before. I would not use the word trendy to describe it.. It's not even in the top 1000 on last year's SSA list.
Re: Magnolia?
i echo this. I like magnolia, different and nice.

it's NMS, but I like it (as in, I would like it on other kids, but wouldn't use it myself...if that makes sense)
I would pronounce it mag-noh-lee-ah

I'm a big fan of Magnolia.
I lean toward the mag-nol-yuh pronounciation.
I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.
