Natural childbirth in a hospital??

Hello! First time mommytobe and I have a few questions about natural delivery in a hospital. With the Dr I have chosen I am set to deliver in Dec Scottsdale Shea and I was wondering if any of you know or have experience about delivering natural, w/o medication in a hospital. Can you use any other positions to deliver other than flat on your back? Are birthing balls available? A tub to labor in? If any of you know or can share you experience from that hospital or any other please share! I was considering delivering at home with a midwife, but my DH feels most comfortable with us choosing a hospital, so I would like as much as possible to have a home birth experience in a hospital, if that's even possible = thank you!!

  • I am looking to have a very similar experience. This is the practice I am going with, if you are interested:

  • I would encourage you to look for nursemidwives who catch babies in the hospital. We typically offer that Homebirth experience in the hospital. Mercy Gilbert has tubs we use for laboring. Check them out! They have a great reputation for respecting natural birth and working with families that want that experience.
  • Have you thought about looking into a birth center?  It's a nice step in between a hospital birth and a home birth.  I went into my son's hospital birth planning on having a natural birth, and while it wasn't a bad experience, my plans were thrown off track from the second I walked in the door.  My birth plan said no IV.  Well as soon as I walked in, they said, "OK but let's at least put a Hep-lock in just in case."  My doctor had approved intermittent monitoring ahead of time, so I thought I'd be free to labor without being attached to any machines.  Well it turns out to the hospital, "intermittent" means I still needed to be hooked up to monitors for 20 minutes out of every 60.  I knew I couldn't birth in water, but I had planned to labor in water.  Well it turns out you can't labor in water if your bag of waters had already ruptured, which mine had done at home while I was asleep.  I didn't want any meds, but after a mere 4 hours without making much progress, Pitocin was recommended.  The epidural followed.  I had a beautiful, uneventful medicated birth, but it wasn't the birth I wanted.  It's possible to have a natural birth in a hospital, but you often have to be on the defense from the second you walk in, ready to advocate for what you want.

A midwife who has hospital privileges is definitely a step up, but you are still at the mercy of the nurses on staff at the hospital, who may or may not be natural-birth friendly.  The nurses can make or break your entire experience.  It's also still a hospital, and you may be subject to hospital protocol.

For my current pregnancy, we are seeing the midwives at Babymoon Inn birth center and I could not be happier with my experience.  It's SO refreshing and comforting to know my care providers are 100% on the same page as I am regarding my wishes.  I don't need a birth plan because anything that I would put on it is the standard of care there!  I would highly recommend looking into all of your options.  Babymoon gives free tours if you are interested.

     Best of luck to you!

  • Thank you for your info, I know SHC allows you to labor in water, but now I'm wondering if the rules will be the same as you had at your hospital. I will have to call and ask about that and the monitoring, it'll better to know now then when I'm actually in labor! I did look into Babymoon and it seems so wonderful, I've known 2 people who loved their experience. Perhaps I will just have to take a tour!!
  • I would urge you to move to a hospital and Midwife that is PRO natural child birth! I would also suggest looking into a doula!

I wanted a natural birth. I went to Bethany Womens Care for my prenatal care and delivered at Phoenix Baptist. I used Liberty Birth as my doula.

Here is my birth story complete with photos! I strongly encourage you to get a birth photographer if its in the budget, the photos we got are beyond priceless!!!
