TTC after 35

Newbie and maybe jumping the gun

Hi everyone,

New to this board. I will be 35 in a couple of months, DH is 36, we have an almost 4 and a half year old son. May was our first attempt to conceive and it was a flop. Stupidly, I thought this would be fool-proof because I was using the fertility monitor. I may be going overboard ,but i'm starting to get a little nervous because of my age. Do you think my ob would agree to some basic fertility tests to make sure i'm actually ovulating and that my plumbing is all clear or should I be patient and wait a few months? TIA

I am 39. I had MC in feb. dr told me if not pregnant after 6 months to call. If we were younger it would be a year most Drs will not do anything for us until after 6 months. Only a 20 percent chance of getting pregnant each month so it is slim. We tried last month and nothing so we are on month 2.

I temp, chart, use OpKs and just bought a fertility monitor to use next month if we are not pregnant this month. It is not easy!!!

    Good luck!!!

  • You are going a little overboard with your expectations. One month trying without success is way too early to be freaking out. Even with perfectly timed sex based on OPKs, temping, etc. you still only have a 20% chance of conceiving on any given cycle, and it can take a healthy couple up to a year to get pregnant.  As PP already said, doctors won't even look at testing until you've been trying for a year, or 6 months if you're over 35. You're not even 35 yet. Chill!

Are you temping and charting as well as using the monitor? If you want to ensure the best timing and chance at conceiving, get an account with Fertility Friend (you can click on my chart link to get there) and do the tutorials, they're excellent and give you all sorts of info about how your body/cycles work. Get a BBT thermometer and start temping. Even if you're using an ovulation monitor, you can only tell that your body is gearing up to O, only temping actually confirms that you've O'd. Doing all of this will help you to feel like you're doing all that you can and you have some control over the process.  Then, if after six months you haven't conceived, take your charts in to your doctor and you can go from there.

    Ladies,

Please give me the low down on temping. Where do I start? And what is a good thermometer to get?

  • So, many women on the TTGP board use Fertility Friend (website and/or App) to track daily temps and other stats.  It's great, and it's free unless you sign up for the VIP version.  It also has wonderful tutorials that I highly recommend.

You temp first thing in the morning before you get out of bed with a basal body thermometer (the Mabis brand from Walmart works great and costs about $9). You could use a regular thermometer, but a BBT measure to the hundredths place (Think 98.54).  Temping is easy to do, and you can find out so much about your body.  Good luck!

  • Fertility Friend is awesome I highly recommend it. as the pp mention a BBT temps to the hundresths place which makes a difference, get a BBT don't try with a fever thermometer. target, walmart, cvs, will all have them from expensive to inexpensive. When temping it is important to look at the patterns not necessarily an individual day. Your temps can rise and fall day to day, however after you O you will see a distinct rise in your temp. That temp according to TCOYF you need 18 days of high temps and your pregnant. Some ladies have a dip in temp righ before they O, but once yuo see that high pattern its too late to BD, so using the OPK to target the fertile time along with your cm, then temps will tell you if you O. Hope that helps good luck.

This.  It's totally normal to not get pregnant the very first month, regardless of your age.  It's even more normal for the 35+ (well, not quite in your case) to take a little longer.

Do the tutorials. I'd also recommend reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility (TCOYF) as it will clue you in on the things your chart will show you even more. Charting takes some getting used to, but in the end you'll learn so much about your body...info that will potentially be valuable to you down the road.

    Ladies,

You can get a BBT at any pharmacy and most big box stores ( Walmart  and Target) I have the CVS one.  I would go to fertilityfriend.com (it's free and has a free app as well).  Do the free tutorial on temping.  It is super easy!
