Killian or Cillian

I am finding conflicting reports on this name.
Is it Cillian, Killian, or Kilian?
I've check out behindthename and it looks like Cillian is the Irish version and Kilian is German? But the Irish saint was Kilian?
Anyone with more insight?

Re: Killian or Cillian

  • Cillian was the Irish saint. Killian is the Anglicized variant of Cillian and Kilian is German as well as an Irish variant. That information can from behindthename.

Thanks! I've been looking at some sites and 99percent of them have the Saint listed as Kilian....so that's where the confusion comes for me.
Looks like Cillian is the more popular spelling but that Kilian is acceptable. I just want to make sure I have the correct Saint spelling!

Cillian is Irish; Killian is the anglicized (and more American) spelling  Check out the link above; it is a great resource and the gentleman that pronounces and narrates the site is brilliant!

    -All the best!

  • I think people will relate it to the beer so if you are using this name I would spell it that way..Killian..I feel most would assume it was spelled this way.
  • The Gaelic version is Cillian. The beer is Killian.

I'm all about original Gaelic spellings, so the C version would be my choice. But I don't think you can go wrong depending on how you want to interpret it.
