Sorry can't make clicky.

Edit: here's the other article since links aren't working. Other is attached as a comment.

So, I recently came across more uptodate information about the whole recall and the batch numbers.
Vulli has now put an agency called consider it GmbH in charge of handling the recall of the old Sophies in Germany. You thought the whole batch number thing was confusing? And after reading my last blog post on it, you finally thought you had figured it out? Well, guess again, because its not getting any better, let me tell you
The most recent message by consider it GmbH read like this:

We were put in charge of handling the quick and smooth processing of the exchange of Sophie the giraffe and other products from natural rubber made by Vulli S.A.S.

For questions concerning this, you can reach us via our Hotline at 4942140899301 MoFr 8am5pm or via email
at vulliconsiderit.de. Should you be in possession of a Sophie that does not have the batch numbers 321230, 321300, 322090 or 322105 the batch number can be found on the inside of the left front leg, please contact us by phone or email.

Contrary to the information I had when writing the last blog post about the safe batch numbers, it is apparently NOT correct that all batch numbers after a certain production date October 27, 2011 were made with the changed production process, which reduced the amount of nitrosatable substances to the level permitted in Germany.
At this point it is safe to say that
1. The Sophies produced before October 27, 2011 were definitely made with the old production process, which results in the higher amounts of nitrosatable substances.
2. The Sophies with the following batch numbers are definitely safe:
321230
321300
322090
322105

Yes, and unfortunately, that is all that is certain right now.
So what about all the other Sophies? What about the batch numbers in between and after those four, you want to know? Well, Im sorry, but I have the same question and so far no answer. While the message from consider it doesnt say that all other Sophies are bad, I would at this point assume that they are since they are not explicitly deemed one of the safe ones.
Since only those four are definitely safe, it is not correct anymore that all Sophies after a certain production date are safe. And even in between those batches mentioned, Sophies seem to contain the higher levels of nitrosatable substances. To me it makes absolutely NO SENSE that Vulli would switch their production back and forth between the new/safe process and the old/unsafe one But thats what they seem to be doing? Oh well. Go figure.

As for all those of you who are NOT in Germany and have a Sophie that doesnt have one of the safe batch numbers, sending an email to the address mentioned above will most likely not help since the consider it GmbH is only in charge of the recall IN GERMANY, but go ahead and bug Vulli directly about the recall https://www.sophiegiraffeusa.com/contact.html, then maybe they will eventually consider exchanging yours as well!

  • Everything I google said sold before 20 December 2011 in Germany.

  • Here's what it says. Plus all Sophie's were made in the same factory and Germany has higher standards than US and Canada for toy regulations, so even though it's toxic US and Canada haven't recalled it yet. Just see if your sophie's cereal number is one of the safe ones or not. Or don't, whichever...

Recall of Sophie the giraffe Sophie's friends are also affected
    May 22, 2012 Article was updated May 30, 2012
Good news for parents: more than half a year after OEKOTEST had found dangerous nitrosatable substances above the limits permitted in Germany in November last year, the manufacturer has finally started to recall the affected products.
Apart from Sophie the giraffe, other products made from natural rubber are affected by the recall, as for example the So'Pure teething ring, the big Sophie as well as Sophie's friend Chan Pie Gnon.
Just like Sophie, the So'Pure teething ring and Sophie's friend Chan also contain nitrosatable substances in dangerously high levels and are not fit to be put into the hands of consumers, as OEKOTEST discovered in their tests in March. It has been scientifically proven that nitrosatable substances can turn into highly carcinogenic nitrosamines when reaching the stomach which is to be expected, as Sophie is specifically recommended as a teething toy for babies. Additionally, the giraffe is according to the manufacturer perfect for soothing baby's mouth when she's teething.
In a note sent to retailers, Vulli recalls all Sophie the giraffe toys from batches sold in Germany before December 20, 2011, and promises that they will be exchanged for free with products made after March 2012. The manufacturer reports to have adjusted the production, so that compliance with the German regulations is now guaranteed. A first new batch has been distributed to retailers starting December 20, 2011, another one starting March 2012.
    Note to the consumer:
The batch number can be found on the inside of the left leg. The batch numbers 321230 and from 321300 up are supposed to be new and safe. However, according to EFK1, tests have shown that products with the bath numbers 331157, 331191 and 331101 are not safe. OEKOTEST therefore contacted EFK and asked, These higher numbers logically would be thought to be newer batches than 321300. Please disclose promptly if the batch numbers are applied consecutively and if thus a higher figure points to a newer production batch. If this is not the case: How are the batch numbers put together and how do they show which products are made after March 2012?
Since this inquiry, EFK has disclosed the following: The first two figures are factory internal serial numbers, the third position marks the year of production and the last three figures the day of production start. For example: 321300. 32 = internal serial number of Vulli, 1 = year 2011, 300 = 300. day in the year 2011 = October 28, 2011.
EFK adds, We actually made a mistake in the wording of our last note to the retailers. Correctly, the sentence should have read: Unconnected to this, Vulli has decided to exchange all products from batches which were distributed before December 20, 2011 with Sophies out for delivery since March 2012, starting with batch number 321300.
    Update May 30, 2012
There was a bit of confusion about the batch numbers. New and safe are the batch numbers 321230 and from 321300 up.
Consumers can now decode the batch numbers with the help of our example. Please disregard the first two figures.
Vulli/ EFK also exchanges their other products from natural rubber, as long as they were purchased through EFK.
Concerning the exchange, a note to the retailers is sent out: In the course of the exchange of Sophie, Vulli would like to ask you to also send back the other products from natural rubber, as the So'Pure teething ring, the big Sophie, and Sophie's friend Chan Pie Gnon, as well as all sets which could contain the old Sophie.
The distribution of the first products made with the new method is supposed to probably proceed in July.
OEKOTEST recommends: The recall is only directed to retailers.
Therefore parents should return all Sophie the giraffe models with batch numbers other than 321230 and 321300 up as well as all other toys from natural rubber by Vulli to the store and to assert their rights exchange or money back.

Most recalls are released and can be googled pretty easily. It's not that I trying to be snarky but I don't find your sources credible when at first the links didn't work and second I couldn't find anything myself I find this post kind of pointless.

A lot of us including myself have a Sophie and if I found out from a credible source it was recalled I would pull it away from her in heartbeat but with what you have provided I will not.

  • I get a recall notice via email for every single recall on anything kid related from the CPSC.  I haven't gotten an email about Sophie.

Sorry, but I am just not buying it.
