I've loved Tristan since I first read it in a novel 25 years ago. A friend used to say "a boy will be teased. It sounds like Kristen!"
Thoughts?
Avery is another I've loved a long time...for a boy. I'll always think of it as a classic boy's name. I don't think I'd use it now if Baby 2 is a boy given its current popularity as a girl's name.
Still...thoughts?
Thanks, ladies.

I love Tristan ever since Brad Pitt played him in the movie Legends of the Fall! He was very manly in that movie so I do thinks its masculine! lol
The name Avery is way too popular for me, I know about 5 under 6years old that are Averys
Kids make fun of anything, so I wouldn't worry.
I like Tristan MUCH better than Avery.
Avery on the other hand is just too popular as a girl to be used for a boy right now IMHO. You wouldnt want him in a class with a bunch of girls with his name.
DH is adamant that Tristan will be a boy's name if we have one. I don't love it, but I don't hate it.
I'm over Avery

I dislike Tristan and while I think Avery if a fine name but I've seen it used on so many girls. I second using a distinctly masculine name for the middle.
This
Tristan is masculine. Think back to the legends/operas/stories of Tristan and Isolde. even if it rhymes with "Kristen," I don't think that is the most feminine sounding of female names. It isn't like it rhymes with "Pansy" or "Isabelle"
(side note: My name rhymes with Tristan - the worst the kids could come up with in grade school was "Bisten" as a sound-alike. Even as a 6 year old, I thought this was pretty weak, and it didn't bother me.)
I first heard Avery as a masculine name; very common in the south. I have only heard it as a girl's name in the last few years, but it is apparently gaining popularity.
I echo the sentiment that a masculine middle name will help. Also, think about how the names will shorten/potential nicknames. How do they sound with your last name? Sometimes the combination of names makes or breaks it for me.
Avery has never been my favorite; but a quick search tells me the following:
French Meaning:
The name Avery is a French baby name. In French the meaning of the name Avery is: Counselor; sage; wise.
American Meaning:
The name Avery is an American baby name. In American the meaning of the name Avery is: Rules the elves.
Anglo-Saxon Meaning:
The name Avery is an Anglo-Saxon baby name. In Anglo-Saxon the meaning of the name Avery is: Rules with elf-wisdom.
English Meaning:
The name Avery is an English baby name. In English the meaning of the name Avery is: Rules with elf-wisdom.
Aubrey has a similar "elf" meaning, but I reeeeeally don't like that for a boy. Maybe take the "wisdom" angle and go with Sage; that ought to throw an interesting name in the mix...!
It's ok to ignore this post; it might be the prune juice talking
Best of luck
Tristan is NMS.
I wouldn't use Avery for a boy, given how popular it is for a girl

I'm naming my son Avery Nicholas.
i think it is cuter on a boy and has always been a boys name until the last 10-15 years when it ranked higher in boys in 1998. It is the French form of Alfred.
i kinda like that it isn't popular on boys actually and I think it is masculine.
I would also like to post I asked this question on here about a month ago and the post was 85% supportive of using it in a boy lol
