A friend of mine and I are brainstorming ways to not have to "work for the man" in the future now that we have little ones. We are discussing ideas for potential businesses tonight over dinner. If you were going to realistically start your own business, what would it be? Let me pick your brain!
Re: If you were going to start your own business, what would it be?
DH and I would want to open a business somewhere else, but he is the ideas man. We both work in finance, so would be able to assess the risk etc.
When I was out of work a few years ago DH encouraged me to come up with a business plan and give something a shot; I was too focused on getting a finance job back so that I could comfortably have our baby. Things that I had in mind at that time were real estate agent, cafe/lunch spot, or (tho not money making) travel blogger.
Oh and if it helps... the one thing that I think that is not readily available for todays mom... nursing clothes that look a little more normal... don't even need to be specifically nursing, but nursing friendly. I struggle daily with what to wear and I can't bring myself to buy any of the crap at the local maternity store... I'm not pregnant anymore and I don't want to look like I am (FWIW, I hated maternity clothes too - H&M was a lifesaver).
A play place for small children/children's museum type thing. We don't have nearly enough activities for kids here. Or a nursing bra specialty store that carries the odd sizes. Or if it took no extra education except for my current teaching degree, I would love to open my own preschool.
My husband and I own a music school. We have private lessons on all instruments and Kindermusik classes for the little ones. We teach and have hired teachers for the instruments we don't play.
Owning your own businesses is awesome! It's a lot of work and you're never really "off", but if you're the type of person who likes to be in control of your time, money, and lifestyle, then it's a good choice. I cannot imagine working for someone else now that I've been working for myself for a few years.
My two favorite things in this world (besides my family) are food and travel. I always thought about starting a B & B helping business. I would fill in while B & B owners took time off. I even looked into moving into the New England to be in a area full of them.
It's a bit of a pipe dream now. With a LO - home is where I need to be.
