Not voluntarily vocal?

This is how I describe my 26 month son. He knows more than the average number of words that he should for his age per my pedi. And he will use 2 word sentences, sometimes 3 but that is more rare. But he still mostly baby talk bables and only uses actual words when he really wants something. So to me, he just really doesnt want to talk. He will repeat any word. And if you ask him what something is, he knows and will say it. He just doesn't really speak actual words unless asked or he really needs or wants something. But he has known every single letter, upper and lower case, since about 15 months. And now he knows every number 110 and what sound every letter makes. I don't think he is behind necessarily, but the not talking drives me a little nuts! We are sometimes so shocked at new words he says because he says them as though he has known them for so long. And i think he has, he just doesnt want to say them. Anyone else out there in a similar boat?

Honestly, this is something I would seek a speech language evaluation for as his language should be more functional and social. Could be nothing or could require language therapy. Communication isn't just about number of words and what you know so much as how you use it.
