Camping Trip with two 18 month olds

So my family is planning a family camping trip.  The trip will most likely be out of state(maybe Delaware) with at least a 3-4 hour drive from our area to the camp site.  I would really love to go because I just missed out on my cousins destination wedding because I didn't want to take the girls to the dominican republic.  So my question is has anyone done anything like this?  The girls have to come with me because there would really be nobody else to stay with them since my whole family is going and I do not trust DH's family to take care of them for an entire weekend. So leaving them at home isn't an option.  I would probably rent a camper so that we could have air conditioning since we would be going at the end of July.  So what does everyone think about doing this?  I'm a little unsure about it because I have never taken them anywhere overnight.  I would be going alone because DH has to work, but I would have plenty of people there to help (there will probably be at least 20 other people there).  So what are your thoughts on this?

Re: Camping Trip with two 18 month olds

  • I think with a camper this is doable. Make sure the door locks well and that the girls can't open it.

I would  ask that someone in the family (your mom maybe?) stays with you in the camper and knows that they are your designated helper (and that they are ok with it!) Yes, family will probably help out but that can get tricky (if "everyone" is watching the girls - all of a sudden no one is).

I'd see if pack n' plays fit in the camper (you don't want to suddenly be dealing with not wanting to stay in bed on top of everything else).

Pack carefully so you have everything you need and things like bottles, snacks, etc. are close at hand.

  • A camper is a definite.  My cousin was thinking that everyone would use tents, but I don't know if everyone would go for that.  I like the idea of having a dedicated person to help me with the girls.  I didn't even think of that.  I was thinking of having my mom and her husband split the cost of a camper and we could all stay in it.  I do have two PNP's so I would bring them for sure.  Thanks for the input.

  • That sounds miserable to me. But I'm not the biggest camping fan, so that probably doesn't help. So much to pack.. you'll have to watch your kiddos like a hawk.. then at bedtime they'll still be able to hear everyone outside of their camper (my kiddo would never go for that).

  • We just got home from a camping trip with my 18 month old. We stayed in a 2 person tent with DH, and we had a blast. LOs aunts and uncles (teens) we there, and I just had to let go of the option of keeping my LO clean at the beginning. He was a disgusting dusty, muddy mess and he had an amazing time. We only stayed one night, and there was a bathhouse within walking distance, but it was fun (an exhausting). Bring lots of snacks, and a few toys- keep it simple with toys. i brought a large sand shovel, a tiny play tent (because I didn't want him trying to climb in and out of ours and getting dirt or sand in there), a ball and his teddy bear along with a few books for bedtime. Good luck!

Aaaah = My reaction to the above trip, LOL. But that is just me. OP your trip actually does sound doable to me, and I am not into camping. It would be better if your DH is going. But since he isn't, I want to throw out there that I agree with the poster that said you want to designate someone to help you b/c it is totally true that if everyone is watching your babies it will suddenly mean no one is and that can be very very scarey, especially when camping.
