Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How to encourage crawling/moving

My 10 month old does not crawl, scoot, or even get on his hands and knees. He also can't get into a sitting position.  He can pull himself up but only if i put him directly in front of the object he wants to pull up to.  He loves standing but he fully depends on me to get him there.  I try to give him plenty of floor time to encourage him but he sits there and throws a fit until i come to his aid.  I try to ignore him but he does not give up.  It starts as a whine and then turns into a full fledged cry.  I fear he will never learn to do anything himself.  Do I let him sit there and cry and cry and hope he eventually give up or do i continue to help him get around?

Re: How to encourage crawling/moving

  • Oh, I was SO in these shoes when DS was about this age! I thought I was going to be completely bonkers before he finally figure out how to get around. I tried to give him practice time every day, several times a day. It also helped tremendously for me to actually leave the room for a few minutes. I made sure he was in a place that was safe, of course. Those were the times when he would either pitch the biggest fit or actually move to go get something. Initially, he started moving to go get the buttons on the AV equipment in the den (probably appealing to him b/c there were flashing lights AND it was a no-no), but at least it got him moving! Once he figured it out, he was much happier.
