Lip Tie

Hey was wondering if anyone else's LO had a lip tie? DS does and when I took him to the dentist to have it fixed he says they dont repair them until age 3, but when I read online I saw people doing it much younger because it would cause speech impediments. I was just wondering what if anyone received different advice from their dentist?

Re: Lip Tie

  • My niece has one.  She is two and talks up a storm, no issues with delay.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.

  • I asked the doctor if Parker had it, because I'm pretty sure he does...I can't lift up his upper lip! She said she didn't think so and that when they get more teeth and as they get bigger the mouth changes so much.

i had mine moved up when I was younger but it was older than 3..... I think that because the mouth is changing as more teeth come in, it makes sense that they don't do it this early...

  • DD2 did, but she fell one day and cut it. This is very common and one of the reasons they tend to wait a while before getting surgically involved. She has a slight tongue tie, but they are going to wait and see if it actually causes a speech problem. No need to fix something that's not broken.

  • I had one and must have busted it when I was little because I have a very noticeable scar. At DS's next pedi appointment I will talk too him about either asking the dentist or doing it in the office.
