Interview/hyped this job up!

I had a second interview today, for a job i've totally been obsessing about. this one was with the hiring manager in the office I would be at. I think I had hyped this job up to be more than it is. It would be an awesome, challenging opportunity but the pay is the same as I make now (i currently earn at the top end of the pay scale for the new one), they have a significantly less amount of vacation and honestly I've gotten used to my flexible hours. They are more by the book business hours. It's also a MUCH longer commute. Oh if only it was closer to my house...it just seems like too many kinks to negotiate. Am I selling myself short if I don't try? I don't need a new job I am just beaten down by my current one.

  • If it were me, I'd keep looking.  I'm in a similar situation and have been looking for a different job, but I've already told myself that I will not compromise on flexible hours/telecommuting option.  I will stay where I am until I find a job that will offer that option.  I love being able to adjust my work schedule to accommodate things in my personal life.  Since DS was born, I've been able to telecommute a few days a week, so I can spend the time when I would be commuting with him.

If offered the position I don't think it will hurt to negotiate realistic goals but you must be flexible. Maybe you can ask for one compromise-an extra week of vacation.  The employer and you have the right to decline.

Until then, I would continue to look for an employer that will fit all of your needs.

This is my DEAL BREAKER!  My commute is on average 1 hour.  I will not accept a position anywhere that is more than an hour and even then I'm looking for 30 minutes or less.  That's time away from my family and household duties.  I'm gone for 10 hours a day, and that's not including pick up/drop off at school that I will start doing in August.

What you've described doesn't sound like a step up really, so unless you don't have the opportunity for growth at your current position, I say stay and look for something else.  Since you don't have to switch jobs, you can be picky!
