2nd IVF failed. Donor eggs or 2nd opinion?

Hi, I'm sorry for the long post. I've lurked for a while and appreciate all the great information I've learned from all the other posts.

Now, I have a question and would love to have advice from you amazing ladies!

I failed my 2nd IVF cycle with a BFN just 5 days ago. This clinic makes you call a voice mail number to get your results, so I never actually spoke to a real person until today, when the RE fellow (and not the attending doctor) called me today (I go to a major medical center that you all would have heard of, although I now don't think their RE dept is very good).

They are not offering me any more cycles on my own eggs and suggest I move on to donor eggs. I was already pretty down in the dumps from the result of the test, the fact that nobody cared to call until now, and now this is pretty devastating.

I feel like there must be something else I can try. I am going to get another opinion, but the RE fellow made it clear that they would no longer offer me a cycle on my own eggs. He used the words "futile" and "less than 5% chance" of success.

It seems like a lot of people on the forums are using different protocols, like with steroids or growth hormone. My husband and I felt like we wanted a 2OP anyway, since this clinic didn't seem to have any bright ideas about something else to do, even before we got our negative HCG.

Has anybody been told they wouldn't even be offered another cycle after completing only one cycle? And found a different opinion elsewhere?

 Thanks in advance!!!!

Details: age 36. No male issues. AMH 0.5, FSH ranges 5-13.

had 4 IUI's with clomid, all BFN

4/2013. Had one IVF cycle gonal F 300/menopur 150/ganeralix canceled day 8 due to poor response (E2 ~ day 4= 49, day 6= 89, day 8= 196). RE suggested maybe over suppressed due to OCPS x 5 wks, but other REs in same practice said no.

5/2013: 2nd IVF cycle:  No suppression; micro dose lupron with gonal F 300/menopur 150. Stimulated 13 days then triggered with 4 follicles > 10 mm (26mm, 18mm, 14 mm, 11 mm) and 10 small ones. 5 eggs retrieved, one totally immature, 4 M1's.

three of 4 fertilized, 2 made it to day 2 , total of 2 embryos (one 5 cell grade A and one 3 cell grade B)  transferred at day 2 (they do day 2 transfers here).  2wks later= BFN.

Re: 2nd IVF failed. Donor eggs or 2nd opinion?

  • I'd say get a second opinion. Heck...get a few of them! When my third, yes third, completed IVF failed in January I got second opinions from 4 different RE office/clinics and its amazing to see what different doctors have to say. Things that I suspected were a little off, but took for granted since they were the experts, I had other REs say they wouldn't do. So....couldn't hurt right?! Good luck!

  • So sorry for your bfn.
I had three failed ivfs and only the first time I actually made it to egg retrevial. I am a poor responder and first IVF only produced 2 eggs.
Second IVF had found out I was DOR so tried a mini ivf. Produced no eggs that is when my RE pushed me to donor eggs. I knew I was not ready for that and practically made him do One more IVF with my eggs and max stims. Only produced one egg and did not got to surgery for it. I now have some closure from doing all I could do with my body and have since moved to DE but only you will know when it's time to move on so if you feel like your not done cycling get second opinions. Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

Definitely get multiple opinions! You may still come to the conclusion that Donor Eggs are the way to go, but you will have more peace of mind. I would guess that with your age and numbers there are plenty of other good RE's who would be willing to try cycling with your own eggs. I am getting a 4th opinion next week on my situation. Best of luck!

  • I would absolutely get a second opinion. Your 2nd ivf seemed like it went perfectly normal for someone with low amh. When my first one failed I asked me RE about do or eggs and she responded that she doesn't think we are even close to that yet. My first yielded similar results to yours and my second one with a different protocol ended up being successful so far. Good luck!

  • my first RE literally made me cry after almost every appointment because she has no people skills and i found out later she dragged out my process. (probably for the money for the extra tests that i didn't need) i went and saw my second RE and she is amazing and the process has been great and i feel completely comfortable with her. My first RE was also a private clinic and my second RE is apart of a major hospital and they are great so you just gotta find that right RE for you.

Totally agree with this. I have never heard of an RE giving test results via messages instead of a live person. I'm sorry sweetie- please like the others said get a second or even a third opinion. This should be your choice if you feel comfortable moving on after doing all what you can do! Good luck xoox

  • Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your advice. I'm glad to hear that others think there are RE's out there that won't give up on my eggs and have had success!

I feel like I've been kicked out of that RE office. Honestly, after the first cancellation we started to feel like they had no idea what they were doing, and we didn't like the "call the number to get your message" which was sometimes stuff like "we are probably going to cancel you, but we will check labs in 2 more days".

I've called a couple other clinics in my state and will probably get on the waiting list for an appointment!

  • Hi

What state are you in? I had 2 failed cycles myself and I have pcos and partner has low sper count and I would not pay for icsi. 29 eggs and two fertilized and those 2 took on the 3rd try. They told my friend she had a 1% chance and she got prego on the 1st cycle..So make sure you get another opinion. Things happen when its your time, is it your insurance that will not pay for another cycle?

Finally my dream came true:) I'm pregnant!
  • Thanks Fouadi,

I'm glad to hear of your success! I am in Minnesota. We've even talked about me traveling if there is any hope to go elsewhere.

My insurance pays 5K total towards treatment per calendar year so we've maxed that out and its all out of pocket from here. My husband and I are really fortunate in that we are willing and able to pay out of pocket for another cycle--its just that this clinic wasn't willing to do another cycle because they thought it would not work.
